The Army cut the draft rate by more than half and said steps to form two new combat divisions ordered by President Kennedy will proceed. February and March draft targets are 8000 and 6000, down from 15000 and 3000 at the Berlin buildup start. The service announced strength objectives now reached with a 20 percent rise in enlistments since the buildup began.
Laos says reinforced Chinese Communist troops passed through Laos or invaded South Viet Nam, a claim dismissed by Western sources as unsubstantiated. The royal government cites a past false report from 1960 and hints U.S. aid is involved in the dispute.
Montana Congressman Arnold Olsen rejects a Fulton Lewis Jr insinuation that he favors abolishing the House Un American Activities Committee. Olsen defends HUAC and its aims, asserts he supports its appropriations, and criticizes the named accuser as false. He notes no knowledge of the abolition group and calls for checking the record.
James L. Howard, 23, of Kalispell, pleaded guilty in federal court to theft and forgery. He received suspended one year sentences on each count and probation for three years. The theft involved cashing a $123 Treasury check in May 1960 in Wichita Kansas. He was arrested in October 1961 in Kalispell. His attorney cited mitigating circumstances and family hardship.
Bernard M L McAuley 33 and Nancy Ruth Brown 39 were sentenced to 10 days in Silver Bow County Jail after pleading guilty to misapplying funds at Prudential Federal Savings of Butte. Judge W D Murray suspended the rest of a two year term and placed both on three years probation.
Clifton Daughterty of Springfield Illinois was sentenced Thursday to up to five years in prison for bigamy. He said he had two good wives, noting that good women are hard to find.
A statewide meeting to discuss municipal problems will convene in Helena on April 6 with Gov. Donald G. Nutter as keynote speaker. Mayor Vern Griffith of Butte and Al F. Klingler of Shelby announced the event and will organize panel discussions with legislators and state department heads.
Gov. Nutter named John E. ONeill 49 a Democrat and Catholic to the Montana State Board of Education to replace Msgr. Emmet Riley. ONeill, vice president of Metals Bank & Trust Co., takes effect Feb. 1 and could shift board policy toward Nutter’s views. Senate confirmation expected in 1963.
Byron Neil Gallagher 24 a Montana State College student was sentenced to 10 years in prison on each of two robbery counts. The judge ordered concurrent terms and Gallagher faces another Bozeman savings and loan armed robbery charge.
The office of Senator Lee Metcalf said Gulf States Land and Industries expects favorable consideration of a 36 million dollar loan for the proposed Anaconda steel plant. Vice President E. F. wrote Metcalf confirming discussions with Daniel Goldy, deputy administrator of the Area Redevelopment, and said the loan would be approved if Gulf States shows it can complete the financing. The note to Metcalf signals near-term action on the loan.
A near blizzard dumped 6 to 10 inches of snow across the Plains into the Middle West causing thousands of motorists to stall and hundreds of schools to close. Winds up to 73 mph blocked highways and disrupted air travel while a Florida tornado killed a child and left a town hospital overwhelmed. the storm also dumped up to 8 inches in eastern Oklahoma and over 7 inches in Kansas City.
Beaverhead County Attorney Carl Davis announced the Oct. 19 Beaverhead Museum burglary case is solved. Richard H. Blair of Salt Lake City confessed after police traced recovered loot including a black jack a 44 caliber rifle and other firearms found in his car. Blair waived extradition to Montana and faces district court.
SORRY SITUATION KEOKUK IOWA After cashing a bogus check for 45 dollars Gene Tunney of Warsaw Illinois told police he felt real sorry so he cashed another for 55 dollars to cover the first.

East of Divide expect mostly cloudy conditions Saturday to Sunday with scattered snow and cooler temperatures. Winds 25 to 40 mph NW Saturday, diminishing later. Lows tonight around 15, Saturday night 15 to 30, Sunday 25 to 40, with mountain snow and lower elevations possible. End times reference 5 p.m. Friday.
Indonesia's air force bans all flights over eastern New Guinea area to support President Sukarno's mobilization for the liberation campaign. Maj. Agus Suroto warns Dutch surrender negotiations with the Netherlands. The move invalidates existing flight permits and signals possible firm action.
The Aversham Paris Church announced a $1.40 deposit and a $1.49 wide funded option. It stated that no competition would be thrown if customers meet the deposit conditions.
