Anaconda ends a three day freak blizzard that dumped heavy snow across the area. Crews from state county and city cleared roads with blades plows and trucks while traffic was halted at times. Temperatures stayed in the 20s and 30s as winds hindered travel and walking.
Michael J. Quill, leader of the transit strike, collapsed two hours after being jailed for contempt as New York City endures its worst traffic jams. Thousands waited hours at Grand Central and Penn Station while buses and subways shut down, with riders seeking alternate paths home.
The Montana weather map shows a 62 degree range from north to south as arctic air grips the north and east while the southwest enjoys warmth. Mountain passes receive heavy snow. Cut Bank and Havre report record cold while Whitehall and Belgrade reach the 40s. Snow reduces visibility at Monida Pass and Rogers Pass.

Viet Cong guerrillas launched mortar and rifle assaults on government outposts in South Viet Nam. At Khe Sanh 12 advisers were unharmed after the camp was hit and air support helped repel the attack. Two other outposts near Quang Ngai City faced rounds of fire with no casualties reported. 15 guerrillas were reported killed near Tuy Hoa in separate fighting.
President Johnson conferred with Ambassador Arthur J. Goldberg and top aides as a 13 day bombing lull in Vietnam continued. Goldberg reported on talks with Paris and London officials and a Vatican meeting with Pope Paul VI, delivering a papal message urging a permanent end to fighting. He said a UN report on peace efforts would be filed Wednesday and noted negotiable positions, including North Vietnam's demand for troop withdrawal, while the United States maintains its principles. The lull is expected to last at least two more weeks unless actions by the Communist side change the dynamic.
Montana faces possible slowdowns in highway work as federal policy blocks contracts using federal aid if 1966 steel prices rise. State Highway Engineer Paul Johnson notes bids for a Missouri River bridge project north of Craig could be affected, delaying February bid settings and overall program pace.
