Montana House considers 40 hour work week for state staff
Helena AP reports a bill to abolish short shifts would require salaried Montana state employees to work a minimum 40 hours weekly, with holidays exempt. Gov. Donald G. Nutter cites 1957 law aims and says many offices now average 35 hours. House sponsor Rep. Norris Nichols notes staggered shifts.

Mine Death of Mill Worker Max Barrera
Max Barrera aged 60 was killed at 5 a.m. Wednesday on the Mountain Con Mine when a load of timber fell from a car he was helping to move. The load weighing more than a ton crushed him causing instant death. Coroner Andy Aleksich announced the cause as crushed chest injuries. Investigators said upright planks seven feet nine inches long, tied and standing on a car about 15 inches high, caught an overhead wire. Barrera’s partner Joe Rochevar pulled from the front while Barrera was at the rear. Neal Duddy nearby began aid. The inquest will hear from union and mine officials including Neal Duddy, Max Salazar, Reginald Beavis, Nathan May, William Smith, Robert Holloway and John M. Sutey. Death reported as the Belmont Mountain Con area.

Forty four appeals of striking Anaconda Co workers from Montana Unemployment Compensation Commission decisions were decided in split rulings by District Judge W W Lessley. He set aside 29 state decisions and upheld 15 on case specific facts after being brought in when local judges were disqualified. A half dozen similar cases may move to Lessley by stipulation. The state commission plans to appeal to the Montana Supreme Court.

Two Men Escape Injury As Train Hits Car Near Here
James Jennings Williams and Lloyd Adams, both of 4% Mile Vue, escaped uninjured when their 1950 station wagon was struck at a crossing by a Milwaukee Road fast freight train with about 75 cars. The incident occurred around 5:30 p.m. as they headed to work. Williams said he didn’t hear the whistle until late, and the car slid onto the track before the impact flung the hood 75 feet along the rails. The train was en route from Chicago to Seattle and Tacoma, Engineer Cliff Wilcox of Three Forks operated the engine. The collision left the car severely damaged but the men unharmed.
