Snow blankets London as one of the worst storms in years continues. Workers push snow sweepers to clear the area in front of Buckingham Palace and keep routes open amid heavy disruption.
The wife Vivian Milton aged about 35 and her 3-year-old daughter Julie Milton, relatives say, were killed in a blaze that destroyed a new $90,000 lodge at a ranch near Wolf Creek. Their charred remains were recovered after the fire peaked, and a coroner's jury confirmed the identities. A diamond-studded wristwatch identified as Mrs Milton's was found with the bones.
President Kennedy announced activation of two permanent Army divisions totaling 1,712 men after talks with military advisers at the winter White House. More than half of the new troops would be trainees from replacement centers, with the rest drawn from existing units, and the draft schedule unchanged. The Berlin crisis triggers release of two National Guard units later this year, including the 32nd Division from Wisconsin now at Fort Dix, as readiness allows.
Cape Canaveral reports delays in John H. Glenn Jr. maiden orbital mission as Atlas booster problems emerged overnight delaying the Jan. 16 launch to at least Jan. 23. Rep. Victor Anfuso said the date change occurred in Washington and emphasized safety over prestige.
Variable cloudiness with showers on both Thursday and Friday. Cooler Friday with highs around 36 today and 25 Thursday in the northeast and 35 to 40 in the west and south. Lows dip to 10 to 25 Thursday night. warmer Friday afternoon around 45. East of Divide sees much colder conditions Thursday night with scattered light snow. West of Divide shows few snow flurries in the mountains Thursday.
Montana Highway Patrol supervisor Alex B. Stephenson says Montana has reached a stage of desperation and advocates a daytime speed limit. He cites 274 highway deaths in 1961 as the worst year, notes past reductions with a daytime limit, and favors a 65 mph daytime cap rather than 60 mph while acknowledging statewide-wide adoption hinges on legislative action.
A Royal Lao officer reports loyal tribesmen seized a powerful Russian recoilless rifle, believed first of its kind in Western hands. The weapon, with tank-killing capability over two miles, will be sent to the United States for study. Col Eng Pao said it was captured December 22 near Xieng Khouang.
Butte Chamber of Commerce announced 22 committee chairmen for 1962. Don G. Ulrich will preside as president-elect at the January 10 dinner at the Finlen Hotel. Kansas City Mayor H. Roe Bartle will speak on Stand Up and Be Counted. J. Bourke MacDonald retires as president and will present new officers, including Ulrich.
Two Butte sisters Coralyn 9 and Sherril 4 remained in critical condition after an automobile collision near Manhattan on New Year’s Eve. They underwent surgery Tuesday night at a Great Falls hospital as parents Mr and Mrs John C also recovered and stayed at the bedsides.
Rep. Carl Albert of Oklahoma is assured election as House Democratic leader after his challenger Rep. Richard Bolling of Missouri bowed out. Albert, 53, is described as quiet and steady, while Bolling, 45, a liberal from Kansas City, chose to withdraw.
Lisbon reports Prime Minister Antonio de Oliveira Salazar warned Portugal might leave the United Nations in protest of the Indian invasion of Goa. He announced an immediate boycott of most UN activities and said Portugal would not cooperate beyond its direct interests. The speech was read to the national assembly.
Aldermen instructed that a new access road has covered two storm sewers as Powers criticized curtailments by Anaconda Co. and others. The lengthy statement denounces curtailment and frugality seen as harming operations. (Continued Page 18, Col. 7)
SHERIDAN Erwin Allmer, 27, of 141 Kane, Butte, was found in a toppled car north of the Iron Red Bridge on the Jefferson River. Authorities said he lost control, struck a guard rail, then rolled into a willow field. Bob Lott, a Twin Bridges veterinarian, and others assisted at the scene.
The city council on December 18 approved asking the State Highway Dept. to build a new route linking Continental Drive and the Texas Avenue overpass with Park and Broadway. Parking will be allowed on a small Gaylord section near Park while traffic is restricted along Mercury from Gaylord to Warren and along Gaylord east side to Park.

The Serbian Orthodox Holy Trinity Church in Montana releases a Jan 6 to Jan 28 schedule for Christmas observances. Services include Christmas Eve 7:30 am, Christmas Day 10 am, and Epiphany Holy Liturgy. Community members welcome visitors with Slovene greetings echoed in Serbian.
In Belleville, men wait by the St. Clair County Clerk office with a locked briefcase as filing opens January 15 for an April Democratic primary. Richard P. Dilpot notes the first filer will top the ballot, but the candidate’s name remains undisclosed.

Vatican officials announced Fidel Castro has been excommunicated by the Roman Catholic Church. The move follows the expulsion of Ha vana auxiliary Bishop Eduardo Boza Masvidal and 135 priests amid clashes between Catholics and police.
