An overcast moved in to shelter Butte Tuesday night from the winter's worst cold wave. Forecasters revised Wednesday's outlook as clouds linger and temperatures rise slowly, easing the sharp cold spell for residents.
Helena reports extreme cold as Montana noses to 50 degrees below zero with Chester at -50 and many stations in the -30s to -40s. Forecasters warn continuing frigid conditions into Wednesday with subzero lows and some light snow as warmer air nears.
Jaunty John Maragon, once linked to White House figures, was indicted by a federal grand jury on four counts of perjury tied to Senate inquiries. Potentially 40 years jail if convicted on all counts. trial date to be set later.
Clear to partly cloudy and continued cold Wednesday. Temperatures hover around highs from 5 to 15 below zero in western areas, with light snow possible east of the divide. School of Mines reports -2 to -23, airport -31 to 0, Yellowstone valley wind and rising temps mixed across regions.

A Great Northern Railway combined train derailed and slid down an embankment near Lambert Montana injuring nine people Tuesday. Two were seriously hurt including engineer I J Click and fireman L C Dorsey. Also hospitalized were conductor Harry Randolph mail clerk Ernest Hougen brakeman John Stewart and passengers Dred Peterson Carl Anderson and infant in Richey. Frozen ground did not slow the crash which ripped up 300 feet of track and left cars overturned.
The Republican national committee disclosed it ran half a million dollars into the red during 1949 while the Democratic national committee ended the year with $431,168 more than it started. The statements were filed with the House clerk.
The Chinese Nationalists asked the United States for military support, unfreezing of nearly 100 million dollars, and advisers to save Formosa from Communist conquest. President Truman reportedly rejected direct military aid, while economic aid and advisory dispatches remain unclear.
United States Consul-General Angus Ward and his wife along with ten Mukden consulate staff members reached San Francisco aboard the SS President Wilson after a six hour delay from Yokohama. Ward declined to discuss U.S. China policy until consulting the State Department in Washington. He planned to travel to Allegan, Michigan, then on to Washington.
The Associated Press reports 425 people died in three days during the New Year holiday. Auto crashes killed 270, 54 from fires, and 101 from other accidents. Auto deaths ran below the council's 330 forecast for the 78 hour period, but overall injuries may push the total above the average.
In Los Angeles on January 3, aging Fred Stroble stood trial charged with murder in the sex slaying of six year old Linda Joyce Glacoft. State-appointed counsel prepared juror questions aimed at sparing him from a first degree murder conviction and the gas chamber.
A Butte mother and her four children killed in a Saturday shooting will be laid to rest in Argenta cemetery, the first burial there in over 30 years. Funeral services for Mrs. John A. Knapp and her children Winifred Rebecca Fay Lorraine Ernest will be held at Duggan's Merrill mortuary with Rev. Thomas Ashworth presiding. The procession will include four hearses and local mourners, escorted by the Montana state highway patrol, then burial in Argenta.
Silver Bow county issued its first 1950 marriage license Tuesday to Ray M. Kelvington and Frances Joan Ross, both of Butte. County records show a decline in marriage licenses by over 18 percent and a slight drop in divorces from 1948 to 1949, with 627 licenses and 236 divorce decrees issued in the past year.
Four people were killed in election day clashes at Edku near Alexandria amid Egypt’s largest and most bitter parliamentary contest. The violence touched Edku town with the mayor involved, while Premier Hussein Sirry Pasha said the pledge of free orderly voting was fulfilled except for the Edku outbreak. Early returns showed the Waldist party in the lead on state radio.
San Francisco report says prominent businessman Donald Foster, 50, and his wife May Foster will enter Benedictine orders. Foster joins a monastery at Collegeville Minnesota. his wife will stay to sell their $30,000 flat and hobby shop. Funds will be placed in a trust if he fails to meet vows.
Paul Crouch, former Communist, testified at Harry Bridges perjury trial that at a 1941 Oakland CIO convention every resolution aligned with the Communist party line was adopted while ones opposing it were rejected. He claimed Bridges presented a party-favored resolution pledging support for Russia after Germany’s 1941 attack. Crouch warned of party talks to expel Bridges from the party and strip him of CIO leadership in California.
Vice Admiral Gerald F. Bogan, commander of the first task fleet, announced on January 3 he has applied for retirement. He sent a letter to Naval Secretary Francis P. Mathews through channels, a move tied to the congressional probe into the unification of the armed forces and its impact on the Navy’s offensive power. Bogan was told last week of a transfer to a relatively minor post on the East Coast.

Dr Hermann N Sander a 40 year old general practitioner was indicted on a first degree murder charge for allegedly injecting air into the veins of 59 year old Mrs Abbie Borreto during medical treatment The Hillsboro county grand jury issued the indictment after a day long hearing with Dr Sander free on 25000 bond He remains at large until arraignment Thursday with no sign of a petition support among Candia residents who signed a 600 person petition The case is pursued by Attorney General William L Phinney and County Prosecutor William H Craig who vow to press the matter under the law.
The Build Butte committee will hold a dinner meeting Thursday at 6 30 PM at the Finlen hotel. Union representatives contractors and townspeople were invited with reservations pouring in and made through the Silver Bow Employers association or the Chamber of Commerce. Craft unions were invited to join as the group, formed a month ago, aims to discuss building prospects and resolve difficulties.
