Cairo January 4 The British Nile force said the final assault on Bardia had begun to seal its fate after Australian troops and tanks breached the Italian base. Over 5,000 Italian prisoners were taken in the attack bringing total prisoners near 50,000 as the siege of Graziani's North African army neared its end. The assault followed 18 days of land sea and air bombardment and left Bardia in ruins after dawn operations along a 45 mile encirclement.
