President Roosevelt asks Congress for legislation to end harmful business practices and calls on business to cooperate with government. He promises mutual support, notes a tense world, and signals an additional message on reforms to come. The budget plan will not balance income and outgo.
The reorganized Chinese government under Dr. H H Kung plans merciless guerrilla warfare as Japanese troops move south from Taian. Generalissimo Chiang Kai Shek leads a campaign against Nanking. Chinese say two Japanese planes were destroyed at Nanking airfield and guerrilla actions trouble Japanese in the north.
Ford Motor Company asked the National Labor Relations Board to vacate its finding that Ford violated the Wagner Act. The board will defer court action while considering the petition for a new hearing. Ford contends it was denied a hearing and will offer evidence to challenge or justify anti union actions. No schedule for action was announced.
Butte chamber of commerce prepares a Better Business Builders campaign with 159 workers and 96 assistant foremen. A 6 pm meeting at the Chequamegon cafe will nominate 40 prominent men to be named as prospective workers, with foremen selecting three workers each. Con tractor Ward Fanning will preside.
The Better Business Builders campaign opens January 17 and targets 22 thousand dollars by January 21. A 20 promoter team reports strong early support from 159 firms and individuals, with early hopes of at least 15 thousand dollars and a possible rise to 10 thousand already met ahead of schedule.
The body of Ralph W. Thompson, 31, editor of Public Safety magazine, National Safety Council, was identified at an inquest in Chicago after being found slumped on a furniture company loading platform with a deep head wound. Police suspect homicide. hands in pockets suggest a blow from behind.
Montana leaders push Fort Peck expansion with a $100 million cost, Yellowstone basin flood and irrigation study, Gallatin River dam at $5 to $7 million, and WPA and PWA small dam programs. Colorado New Mexico Wyoming projects also gain emphasis as Congress opens.
W E Mitchell of Anaconda appointed to Montana School of Mines board by Gov Ayers to succeed L V Bender who resigned. Mitchell also takes over as superintendent of Anaconda Copper Mining company's Anaconda Reduction works after Bender's retirement. Term runs to April 19 1941.
The Butte Chamber of Commerce reviewed its 1937 achievements and set goals for 1938. It led city progress through education, tourism, aviation, sports, conventions, and highway work, with a 100-member committee guiding improvements and plans already in action for a 10,000-seat high school stadium.
Acting Comptroller R N Elliott condemned federal accounting practices in Washington asserting hundreds of millions of dollars were spent without proper Treasury coverage. He cited agencies and government corporations using outside checking accounts and urged uniform bookkeeping symbols to standardize accounts as Roosevelt’s reorganization proposal nears approval.
A House tax subcommittee resumed tax revision studies and tentatively approved a rate scheme for corporations with profits of 25,000 dollars or less. The proposal sets 12 1 4 percent on the first 5,000, 14 percent on the next 15,000, and 16 percent on the last 5,000, replacing prior rates.
The new Butte high school building, first used by about 1,200 students and 70 teachers, will be open for public inspection this Saturday, January 8 from 1 to 9 pm. Fred B. Taylor says clubs may arrange later visits. senior class members will guide guests, and staff will volunteer during the hours.
Everett, Wash. Jan 3 A man held on a 15 year burglary sentence in Snohomish County says he is officially dead. H G Weston told deputies he left his wife and children at Manhattan Montana four years ago after a dispute. He said a man killed on a government project was identified as him and that his wife has been drawing a death compensation check. He claims he cannot obtain a Social Security number or steady work because he is dead.
Representative May of Kentucky announces he will press for a congressional committee inquiry into the Tennessee Valley Authority. He accuses TVA leaders of misrepresenting plans for a Gilbertsville Kentucky dam and flouting the law to fund the $112 million project, opposing Norris proposed FTC probe. May calls Norris plan a red herring.
Montana weather outlook calls for generally fair skies Tuesday with warmer temperatures east of the divide. Wednesday brings partly cloudy conditions across the state.
President Roose velt outlines deficit reduction and wage hour concerns in a speech to Congress. He urges careful tax policy, crop control cost targets at 500 million, and warns against tax evasion while calling for cooperation among capital and labor to raise purchasing power across farming, industrial, and service sectors.
Montana senators and a representative praised the President’s message to Congress noting support for wage hours anti monopoly and farm legislation. Senator Wheeler said he expects liberal cooperation in enacting reforms while Senator Murray called it a broad effective review of national problems. Representative O Connor called it temperate and sensible and said it could lift the country from recession. Senator O Mahoney also expressed Democrat alignment with the message.
Detroit report states 11 year old Trudie Bennett, daughter of Harry Bennett of Ford Motor Company, has been missing since 6 p.m. Monday. The girl, a Michigan Normal college student in Ypsilanti, left home to arrange for next semester and was to meet her sister but did not reach the college registration office.
Members of the Butte Pioneers' club meet at the American Legion hall at 8 tonight for installation of new officers and a new executive board. A. B. Cohen and John McMillan lead the ceremonies. New officers include Alec Meagher president Joe Binney vice president Anna M Quinn secretary J W Scott treasurer J M Doull historian William O Gilbert custodian A G Nidelcheff assistant custodian. New executive board members are Lloyd Birmingham Larry Hamilton and Joe Fabian. The program features a burlesque of Jack Benny's radio show performed by Mary Powers Mary Jovick Conklin Don Lois ie Phil Harris Mary Lou Violet and others.
