Miss Patricia Maguire once in a coma due to sleeping sickness is showing progress as her mother reports. She recalls events gradually while her stepfather, in a hospital with an eye infection, is also noted. The family mouths cautious optimism on her recovery.
Anne Morrow Lindbergh, mother of the kidnapped baby, testifies in the Hauptmann trial. She describes her and the infant’s routine on the day of the March 1932 abduction and notes the child was healthy and normal.
Joseph W Burns the first Tennesseean to serve as House speaker in 99 years took office amid talk of advancing New Deal measures. President to set tomorrow’s agenda as Democrats begin the 74th Congress with promise to push party principles. Garner presided at the Senate gavel as new members were welcomed in Washington.
The Patman bill for immediate payment of the soldiers bonus led a flood of about 2,400 measures introduced in the House. Patman of Texas introduced the measure with provisions for paying the $2.1 billion adjusted veterans compensation and cancellation of interest on matured certificates.
A late snow report notes I-15 and Monida Pass remain passable with careful driving required in sections. McA nnock Pass and surrounding routes are in fair condition with some treacherous spots, while the Sunshine Trail north of Butte is sectionally good and Boulder Hill remains slippery. Westward roads stay fair with good traction toward Armstead.
Harold Schaal a 16 year old Butte high school student died at Murray hospital after an air container exploded in his father's oxygen plant near Grace. He suffered a fractured skull when a compressor tank top flew Tuesday night. Survived by parents Mr and Mrs Alvin Schaal sister Dorothy brothers Richard Ellsworth and extended family. Funeral arrangements pending with no inquest.
Washington dispatch reports Republicans in Congress unveiled a 20 point plan to foster a speedy and permanent recovery. Drafted mainly by Representative Snell and the House Republican steering committee, it seeks constructive critique of administration proposals while pledging open minded consideration and continued support for essential appropriations.
Governor Frank H. Cooney's biennial message to Montana's 24th General Assembly is completed and in printers' hands. Delivery before a joint House and Senate session depends on organization and any potential Senate deadlock. If stalemate persists, appearance may be postponed.

Ann Harding, blond screen actress, wins sole custody of six year old Jane Bannister after a chamber hearing before Judge Thomas Moran. Harry Bannister did not attend and had opposed the action. Proceedings behind closed doors remain undisclosed.
Washington reports the first half of the current fiscal year closed with a deficit of 1.6999 billion dollars and a record public debt of 28.4787 billion dollars.
Butte saw springlike warmth as the Park and Main intersection logged 40 degrees at 1 30 this afternoon while the airport read 31. Yesterday's high was 34 and a morning low around 14. Barometer stayed steady, indicating fair weather ahead.
The National Recovery board studied plans to combine 91 retail and 21 wholesale codes into a single or dual code for all wholesale and retail firms. A unified labor code would create equal footing on wages and conditions while a central authorities would bear expenses. Small industrial groups with trade associations may oppose the plan.
A New Jersey jury is selected for the Bruno R. Hauptmann trial. The panel includes Charles Walton machinist and Rosie Pill widow among others, with various occupations and children noted.

He cites 1934 deaths exceeding 100000 and total annual losses around 5.4 billion dollars, with shares by industry, home, traffic and public safety. Anaconda Rotarians attend and plan a joint meeting with Butte.
Dillon January 2 Special Reg istration for the winter quarter of the Montana State Normal college opened today and will be about the same as for the fall term. The college office says definite figures are not yet available but most autumn quarter students have enrolled and several new students were registered.
The bulletin notes fair skies in the southern area and cloudy conditions in the north with snow in the northern region. Temperature remains largely unchanged.
