In Salida Colorado six Iowa residents survived a plane crash on Tin Cup Pass after 18 hours in subzero cold. They awoke buried in six feet of powder snow and kept hope by calling to one another and praying. The single engine aircraft crashed while bound for Las Vegas Nevada with no flight plan filed.

In Saint Louis descendants of Azeriah Williamson Hoopes opened a 1876 box with a five-letter cache and a seven line curse promising misfortune if the box is opened before 1976. Grandsons Dr. Thomas T. Hoopes and Dr. Alban Williamson Hoopes uncovered brochures, sewing machines, scales, harvest gear, newspapers, a silk hat, and a Centennial doll baby. Thomas was curator at the St. Louis Art Museum from 1936 to 1964, Alban a Hartwick College history professor.
