Butte logged the state’s coldest reading of minus 34 at 7 a.m. Tuesday, a winter record tied from prior years. Motorists stocked antifreeze, chains, and heaters while stores sold out of winter supplies. Officials warned of icy highways though no closures were reported, as a north cold front was expected to raise temperatures later in the week.
Treasurer J. Emmett Jones reported the county courthouse busy as the annual motor vehicle license plate sale opened with heavy first day lines. The policy banning personal checks caused some delays, with cash or alternative payments urged. Assessor George D. McGrath's office also saw strong business, aided by mail service and early-morning hours as licensing deadline Feb 15 approached.
Motor vehicle license plates for 1968 went on sale Tuesday at courthouses across Montana. Cascade County set up special counters at its courthouse to help residents register cars, pay taxes, and obtain plates in one visit. State law requires registration in the county of residence, defined as where a person rests seasonally. Violators face misdemeanor charges, up to $50 fine, and up to 30 days in jail in addition to buying new plates.
Helena AP report says Governor Tim Babcock will dine with former President Dwight D. Eisenhower likely in Palm Springs California. The meeting marks another informal lunch between the two Republicans with Babcock set to return to Helena Capitol Thursday and Lt. Gov. Ted James serving as acting chief.
More than 150 Butte residents bought city driving permits in the office of City Treasurer Joseph F. O'Neill. The first permit for 1968 went to Police Lt. George Stanich, who has held the No. 1 permit for several years. Permits cost $1 each.

Dr Christiaan Barnard reports a 58 year old dentist Dr Philip Blaiberg received a donor heart that began beating on its own after removal from the heart lung machine. The operation followed Louis Washkansky's transplant and earlier infant heart work in Brooklyn. Blaiberg’s family welcomed the news as Barnard notes lessons from the Washkansky case.
President Johnson signed a social security bill expanding benefits for 24 million people starting in March and proposed stricter welfare reforms. He approved a record $9.3 billion for elementary and secondary schools and $2.29 billion for a trimmed foreign aid program. He created the Special Commission on Income Maintenance Programs led by Ben W. Heineman and named Arthur M. Okun as the new chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers.
Communist gunners fired 120mm rockets at Da Nang air base injuring one American and wounding 13 with minor injuries while the base sustained light damage. An AF gunship spotted the launch site 7,000 yards away and countered with flares and minigun fire.
A derailed two train wreck in Dunreith Indiana triggered explosions and an evacuation for 236 residents as toxic chemicals acetone cyanohydrin and ammonia burned and spilled into Buck Creek. Firefighters fought the blaze and transfer of chemicals from a tanker to a truck was planned taking hours.

Two federal mediators conferred in Butte on the 173 day copper strike, meeting with Anaconda Co officials and union leaders to re evaluate bargaining and the strike status. Dan Edwards and Carl Clavadetscher said no immediate return to talks was planned, and they would depart Butte today.
State Sen. LeRoy Anderson of Conrad submitted his nominating petition and a 232.50 filing fee to Secretary of State Frank Murray on Tuesday for the Montana governorship. He is among several candidates including Lt. Gov. Ted James and Merrill K. Riddick. Atty. Gen. Forrest H. Anderson is also in the field. Anderson, a veteran lawmaker and former U S congressman, has long eyed the 1968 race and has a background as a farmer and World War II tank commander.

Arab raiders crossed into the Negev Desert killing one Israeli soldier and wounding two others, the army reported. The fate of the infiltrators was not announced.
