Traffic deaths lag behind record pace during New Year period
United Press International reports the New Year holiday traffic toll will miss a four year record and may fall below early estimates. The pace slowed to about four deaths per hour by Monday night, raising hopes the final figure will be under the National Safety Council’s lowest forecast of 460 to 540 fatalities in 78 hours from 6 p.m. Friday to midnight Monday.

Big Red One raises funds for scholarships in Vietnam
U S Army 1st Division soldiers in Vietnam contribute from poker pots, beer blasts, and raffles to fund scholarships for fallen comrades. Over four months the fund collected more than 59000 with about 12 scholarships awarded and 80 more on the way. The drive sparked unit competitions and featured events at mess halls and tents. The fund honors Sgt. Ralph Nunez who died last June after guiding an air strike that saved his patrol.

Doctor Hurt in Icy Collision Near Ramsay
Dr. M. A. Gold of 509 Crystal was admitted to St. James Community Hospital after a traffic crash west of Ramsay at 5:15 PM. A station wagon collided with a pickup driven by Darcy DeLong of Opportunity. DeLong and his 14 year old son Rodney were uninjured.

Kalispell Youth Dies After Kidney Transplant Bid
Kenneth Frank a 17 year old Kalispell senior at Flathead County High School died Monday in a Great Falls hospital while awaiting a kidney transplant. He had been in failing health for three years and recently returned from Denver where the procedure was hoped. He spent two weeks in Great Falls with his mother Dorothy Frank and was hospitalized only one day. His father Herman Frank resides in San Rafael California.

Rock slide kills Anaconda rider near Garrity Mountain
Edward Chandler 30, an Anaconda Co. truck driver, was killed Monday afternoon when a rock slide buried him and his horse while riding with G. J. Walker south of The Ranch on US 10A, about miles southeast of Garrity Mountain. Rescue crews recovered his body about 4:30 pm. the cause of death undetermined.
