UPI reports a six day battle near Binh Gia 40 miles southeast of Saigon as Viet Cong overruns a refugee town. US and Vietnamese dead and wounded flood Saigon helicopters while Marines and Rangers recover bodies amid heavy Viet Cong losses.
In Havana Fidel Castro unveiled Soviet land to land missiles and swift reconnaissance jets during a parade marking the sixth anniversary of the Cuban revolution. The slender gray rockets, about 34 feet long, rolled through Havana streets as part of the display strengthening Latin America’s perceived military balance.
Washington AP The 89th Congress begins with Democrats holding large majorities in the Senate 68 to 32 and the House 295 to 140. President Johnson will deliver the opening night message and push a Great Society program as intraparty leadership fights unfold among Republicans over Senate leadership and House chairmanships.

A Northern Pacific switch engine struck a car driven by John Powell at the Garden Avenue and Madison Street crossing Saturday night. Prof. A L Mular of Queen's University leads a team shaping electrical ore separation for medium and low grade iron ores and other metals. The work tests how ore particles respond to treatments and conditions with aim of cheaper, broader future use.

At 3 am Louis Menicucci saw a man at the Buttreys Store on Anaconda's east side attempting to break into a supermarket safe. The burglar fled before police arrived, leaving a large electric drill and tools. authorities said the dial had been removed and the safe was being peeled open.
Montana weather digest warns cold wave conditions for north and east zones tonight through Sunday with heavy winds and snow. Butte Anaconda area expects mostly cloudy skies with possible light snow and temperatures around 22 today and 10 tonight. Northwest Montana faces continued cloudiness and minimal temperature shifts into Monday amid subzero lows across the state.
