In Atlanta Georgia heavy snow paralyzes roads causing monumental snarl. Veteran observers say the disruption is unlike anything they have seen and pedestrians manage faster travel than cars on expressways.
Arizona Senator Barry Goldwater will disclose whether he seeks the 1964 Republican presidential nomination at an 11 am news conference at his Paradise Valley home. He plans a two page statement and question period, while still wearing a healing cast on his right foot.
Public Health Service plans to assist Montana State Health Department in creating a city county health unit in Butte. Dr. Sidney H. Dressler, tuberculosis chief from Atlanta, reported that Silver Bow County tuberculosis cases fell from 18 percent of Montana total in 1959 to 13 percent by 1962. The Denver regional office will train local physicians and support the Silver Bow tuberculosis clinic until the health department is organized.
Partly cloudy today through Saturday with cooler temperatures. Friday brings fair forenoon and scattered mountain snow Friday night. highs in the 35 to 45 range and lows 15 to 30. Saturday warms with highs 40 to 50 and light winds 15 to 30 mph.
Democrats from across Montana travel to Butte for a congressional report dinner at 6 30 in the Finlen Hotel. Sen Mike Mansfield Rep Arnold Olsen and Sen Lee Metcalf are among the anticipated speakers. Dr Joe Kelly says about 400 party members outside Butte are expected to attend.
President Johnson was reported to favor a budget around 100 billion for the next fiscal year. A letter to Pope Paul VI was prepared for delivery during the pontiff’s Holy Land pilgrimage. Officials said postal costs would fall with a 5000 job cut in six months, and housing legislation to spur multi level programs was outlined.
Secretary of State Dean Rusk said a 1964 breakthrough could come if the Soviet Union shows flexibility on disarmament Berlin and Germany deadlocks as the U.S. studies Khrushchev’s new letter to President Johnson. He called for intensive Allied efforts and noted the world situation is in movement.
Greek and Turkish Cypriots agree to a London peace meeting with Britain Greece and Turkey to review the four year old settlement and end communal strife. The conference is set for late January in London and was arranged by Britain's Commonwealth relations secretary Duncan Sandys. The talks follow a cease fire and rising tensions after Makarios sought constitutional changes.
A U S Air Force C124 Globemaster with nine aboard went down in the Pacific. An air sea search was directed toward an SOS signal 750 miles west of Hawaii and 400 miles north of Johnston Island. Officials could not confirm survivors. The plane had eight crewmen and one unidentified military passenger escorting a body.
The Most Rev. Raymond G. Hunthausen appoints Rev. Patrick J. Brown as pastor of St. Mary Parish in Butte succeeding Rev. James Sheerin. Brown, an Anaconda native and Carroll College alumnus, has served as Carroll College faculty and Army chaplain. Sarsfield O Sullivan of Butte will lead St. William Parish in Thompson Falls, his first pastorate, succeeding Rev. Brown. John Bauer moves from Anaconda to Sacred Heart Parish, and Rev. James P. Gannon from St. Helena to St. Rose Parish in Dillon.
Republican Lyman Brewster will attend the Democrats annual Congressional Report Dinner in Butte to hear Senate Majority Leader Mike Mansfield and other lawmakers report on Congress. Brewster, 63, plans his formal campaign kickoff for next week and will be in Helena Sunday.
Minnesota Senator Hubert Humphrey led a national Democratic county chairmen poll for the 1964 vice presidency with 185 votes, followed by Robert F. Kennedy at 166. The survey covered about 3,500 chairmen, with 1,429 responding and 710 naming preferences.
