Treasure State News reports Montana will construct a four story concrete steel state office building near the capitol’s southeast area. The T shaped design features a 182 by 80 foot front with basement and 49,200 square feet of total floor space. State funds include a 550,200 postwar construction appropriation and a 450,000 loan, with land already acquired. The Board of Examiners will set a construction date. In Warm Springs, bidding for replacement of 500 feet of sewage pipe at the state hospital was delayed when only one bid arrived.

Helena January 2 The Montana highway patrol reports no highway traffic deaths during the Christmas to New Year holiday period. Col Charles L Sheridan superintendent notes the year’s toll was 214, two higher than 1946 when 162 died, tracing the trend in state traffic.
In Helena Montana a Billings baby leads a New Year Diaper Derby. The infant, born to Mr and Mrs Clarence Wright, clocked two minutes past midnight Wednesday. Governor Sam C Ford judges the contest and awaits reports on other early year births before ruling on the life time supply of diapers prize.
Great Falls hosts Alaska Airlines officials proposing a cargo maintenance base moved from Seattle to Great Falls for Anchorage routes. If approved, two DC-4 planes would operate weekly through Minneapolis Chicago Missouri Valley and Texas, offering mixed passenger and cargo service starting Feb 1.
Henry Ostby, 27, of LaPorte Minnesota, detained in county jail for the FBI on a Dyer Act charge after National City police stopped him driving a reportedly stolen car from Minnesota to Montana. He is linked to a $2000 lumberyard burglary in which a companion, Alfred Roy, was killed by police.
A United States Forest Service official disclosed that Montana’s pole industry has grown to a $3,000,000 annual business over the last three years. It employs more than 1,800 workers and supplies lodge pole pine for power poles. About 500,000 poles annually can be produced by plants in Libby, Troy, Hamilton, Kalispell, Philipsburg, Butte, Bozeman, Helena, Arlee, White Sulphur Springs, Thompson Falls, and Lincoln.
Graham 47, a Red Lodge native and 14 year Montana highway department clerk, died Friday after a brief illness. He entered a Helena hospital December 27 and moved to Helena in 1929 after working earlier for Power Townsend company. He leaves a widow, two stepchildren, three sisters, and one brother.
Montana Welfare Department administrator W J Fouse reported Friday that January assistance checks totaling 897,401 were mailed to 16,708 persons. Old age payments reached 429,130 to 10,889 people, care for 4,786 dependent children accounted for 126,971, blind persons received 17,306, and alhcosis patients were paid 24,440.
Helena report states local cash contributions for the Northwest Christmas Ship to Europe total $652, with a $5,000 goal. The chamber of commerce extended the deadline to January 12 and wheat donations are accepted through January 10. The ship is set to depart Seattle January 18.

Mrs Mae Sewell left Seattle Friday after five weeks with Vern Evans and relatives. Mrs A L Piper and son Richard left for Chicago after visiting her parents A A Moe and spouse. Miss Eleanor Marx will return to Bozeman this week to resume studies at the State College.

A bond on a minor traffic violation charge was also forfeited.
Manila January 2. The Philippines court of industrial relations announced a temporary settlement of a strike by 1300 employees of major American oil firms. The stoppage had crippled Manila's motorized public transport system due to fuel shortages.
