United Press International reports Montana began the new year with widespread snow as a Pacific front moved through. Western mountains saw heavy snow while temperatures fell from the 40s to the 20s and into the single digits near zero in places after the front passage.
Treasurer J. Emmett Jones says ample stock on hand as 19,000 passenger car sets, 4,500 truck plates, 2,300 trailer plates, 600 motorcycle plates ready for distribution. Total 26,400 sets allotted from 1967 needs and prospects.
Eugene H. Mahoney, a Thompson Falls attorney and seven session legislator, was named Senate majority leader by Montana Democrats. The 52 year old Mahoney received the nod Sunday night to lead the party's slimmed down majority in the Montana Senate.

In Valdosta Georgia a man keeps his dog Jake perched atop the car during drives while the car is wet from rain. Onlookers and a policeman note the dog seems untroubled and Hudson says Jake rides up there often after a puppyhood habit started months ago.
The New Year weekend traffic toll exceeded 300 with at least 306 deaths in 1966 by 11 p m EST. The National Safety Council warned the three day holiday could near the 1964 65 toll, while Texas and California led states with 24 highway deaths each and Michigan Illinois followed with 21 and 15 respectively.
A 33 year old Stevensville woman died in Hamilton hospital Sunday from injuries after a Thursday car crash. Police said her northbound car skidded on slick pavement and hit a parked vehicle. Two of her four children were hospitalized including three year old Valerie who remained in satisfactory condition. Ravalli County had five traffic fatalities in 1966.
