Washington reports the United States escalated its peace push to avoid a bloodier 1966 war. With bombing paused for nine days, Johnson sent peace envoys to Africa and Mexico and ordered ambassadors to press for a truce while warning of a broader war if North Vietnam rejects talks.
American airborne units joined forces with Australian New Zealand and Korean troops in a push against Viet Cong positions near the Cambodian border. The operation seeks two hard core battalions amid reported Viet Cong casualties and ongoing pressure across the countryside. In other action a government force reaction beat back a Viet Cong ambush along the Massac River.
Vehicle license tabs for 1966 will go on sale Monday morning at 8 at the office of County Treasurer Emmett Jones on the second floor of the courthouse. County Assessor George D. McGrath urged applicants to complete the assessment first, noting mail assessment is available this year.
Talks between city and transit unions stalled as the Transit Authority sought contempt orders against the Transport Workers Union led by Michael J. Quill. Quill said the strike would stay in effect with expanded pickets, while Mayor Lindsay warned only a fraction of workers could reach Manhattan on Monday amid a holiday and a near total subway and bus shutdown.
Two separate crashes in western Montana Saturday killed Dennis M Hansen, 24, and Ralph Morris, 27, the state’s first traffic fatalities of 1966. Injuries included six others from Missoula and Seattle. Mor ris’s pickup crash near Troy occurred after the vehicle missed a bridge.
Pope Paul VI broadened his peace campaign by sending direct appeals to Mao Zedong and Nikolai Podgorny to promote negotiations for a just solution in Vietnam. He also urged Ho Chi Minh and Nguyen Van Thieu to seek talks, noting Goldberg’s bearing of the Vatican’s messages to President Johnson.

The Rev Eamon D O Sullivan 46 pastor of St Teresa of Avilla Parish Whitehall died in a Butte hospital after an extended illness. A native of Butte he was born August 8 1919 ordained June 3 1944 and served at St Ann Kalispell St John Frenchtown St Mary Stevensville before his Whitehall appointment in 1957. He was known for kindness and spiritual counsel and also engaged in psychiatry work despite illness. Continued on page 14 column 4.
