Montana's float themed The Last Frontier placed third in its division at the Tournament of Roses New Year’s Day parade. The 80 member Montana Centennial Band led the float with a four-young-lady floral Indian headdress display.
Mayor Vern Griffith will chair a special city council session at 7:30 Friday night. He plans to resign and leave office by January 6 to accept the Montana area coordinator post for Area Redevelopment. He is to be in Washington DC on January 6 for a briefing.
A Montana forecast shows mostly cloudy conditions with snow in the west and on mountains Thursday through Friday with scattered precipitation elsewhere. Winds shift from southwesterly to northerly, temperatures drop, and new highs are 35 to 50 Thursday and 30 to 40 Friday. In the same edition, urban planning notes report a city meeting on a street reconstruction program tied to a 175000 grant match and revised cost estimates after bids exceeded the budget by 119000, with additional engineering costs possible.
Missoula rancher Gaspard W. Deschamps announced he will seek the Republican nomination for the Western Montana U S House seat challenging Democrat Arnold Olsen. Also possible is Wayne Montgomery, longtime GOP nominee, who lost to Olsen in the last general election. Deschamps, a former Missoula County legislator, served on agriculture irrigation and cities committees and sponsored motor vehicle registration fee sharing for Montana cities. More than 450 reservations are indicated for the annual Montana Democratic congressional report dinner in Butte. Rod Cooney says accommodations will be ample in the Silver Bow Ballroom after the 6:30 meal for speeches by Senators Mansfield and Metcalf and Rep. Olsen. A full day of party activity includes a workshop with Mansfield Metcalf and Olsen, a county chairmen convention, and a memorial to President Kennedy. Tickets are five dollars per plate with one hundred dollar sponsor options as part of a 1964 fund‑raising drive.

Foreign aid officials report enough carryover funds to keep a program nearly as large as last year. Total foreign aid for fiscal 1964 stands at 3.6699 billion, down 48 million from 1963 including carryover. Economic assistance remains about 2.52 billion while military aid is 1.15 billion, with Congress funding only 3.6 billion for 1964 after a 1.2 billion cut.
Butte and Silver Bow County closed 1963 with just four traffic deaths in the county and none inside the city limits, marking the safest metropolitan year since 1935. The city last suffered a fatality June 9, 1962, while county deaths totaled 257 since 1935, with 1963 counting as a potential record for the area.
