The Associated Press reports heavy New Year traffic across the Midwest claimed about 100 lives in accidents. Illinois saw nine deaths including six children when a car fell into the Calumet river. Ohio recorded four from an airplane crash in Springfield and three from a cave collapse near Waterloo. Michigan logged ten deaths, with seven in the Detroit area, and overall injuries exceeded 100. Dillon Montana January 1 Special George W. French longtime Beaverhead county figure died at his Argenta home after a brief pneumonia illness. A Bannack settler since 1863 he served as county treasurer and clerk and recorder and later engaged in mining and ranching with brother Anthony. He was born February 10 1859 in Palmyra Wisconsin and is survived by his widow a brother a sister and a nephew. Funeral arrangements have not been announced.
