A 12 year old girl June Nelson was found murdered in a canal near Salt Lake City after an all night search. Police believe she was abducted near her home and killed by a slayer who dumped her body from a bridge into the water. No tracks were found in fresh snowfall as investigators questioned neighbors and reviewed nighttime noises.
A fire at a Monmouth house housing Oregon Normal School students killed three girls. The victims were Florence Graham of Newport and Evelyn Ohman plus an unidentified student. Five other women escaped by leaping from a rear porch roof. The blaze began with an illuminated Christmas tree.
Georgia Tech rode a big break to an 8 to 7 win over California in the Rose Bowl. Roy Riegels, California center, ran into his own end zone after a fumble recovery, a blocked punt then produced the safety that decided the game before a 70,000 crowd.
Franklin Delano Roosevelt was sworn in as the new governor of New York in Albany amid cheers in the capitol assembly chamber. Former governor Alfred E. Smith entered private life after 25 years in public service.
New York January 1 Durant urges creation of a congressional committee to explain to the nation and Mr Hoover why the Eighteenth amendment has not been satisfactorily enforced. He also reveals offering 25000 dollars for a practical enforcement plan after renewing his passport and taking an oath of allegiance before a European trip last summer.
New Year's Day marks the end of freedom for about 50 men convicted of national prohibition act violations who must surrender to a U. S. marshal and begin sentences in the county jail. About 47 federal prisoners are in custody with nearly 90 county inmates, totaling nearly 100 federally convicted defendants and over 200 inmates, requiring extra cots and space. The U.S. government will reimburse the county for housing the federal prisoners.

Manager John Nystrom discovered the break yesterday morning. robbers fled in fright, leaving several tools behind.
Eddie Hagenson a 39 year old Marysville native and longtime Montana resident died after his wife found him unconscious in a hotel room in Arizona. Authorities say poisoning caused his death. coroner to hold an inquest. He had lived in Helena and Great Falls and was well known state wide.
Prohibition administrator E C Yelraan said the New Year celebrations in Chicago and surrounding areas showed growing compliance with the ban. He noted only one raid and three arrests as agents mingled in hotels and cafes, confiscating openly displayed liquor without further action.

The flight, planned between midnight and 2 a.m., aims to avoid refueling until after dawn with a 25 gallon load sufficient for 7 to 8 hours.
On New Year’s Day Washington DC faced rain and a somber mood as police raided three night clubs. About 313 people were present at police headquarters with 64 under scrutiny for alleged festivities. Gordon Stewart Northcott, charged with killing four boys, said he was ready to confess to Sheriff’s homicide Captain Bright at the county jail.
