The last president of the Society of Montana Pioneers, Lumen W. Allen, prepared to cut his 97th birthday cake at Crest Nursing Home while relatives and friends gathered. Refugees rescued from Congolese rebels recount that American missionary William McChesney was trampled to death and his body mutilated before being dumped into the Wamba River. The 28 year old Phoenix native was among 28 whites killed at Wamba as rebels conducted a death dance.

Weather Aids Flood Mission In Northern California

Break in four day weather sent 12 civilian helicopter pilots aloft on New Year’s Eve relief to Salmon Mountains residents cut off for 13 days by flood and snow. They flew food medical supplies and doctors to isolated communities as a new storm approached. A dog team was flown in from Southern California to reach areas when copters can no longer operate.

Merchandise Damaged In Sears Store Fire

A fire in the Sears Roebuck service department at 32 E. Granite caused extensive smoke and water damage to merchandise throughout the store. Two motorbikes were destroyed and several TV parts, wires, and tires ignited. no structural damage. Firefighters contained the blaze after about an hour with the cause undetermined.

Traffic Toll Drops To 260 on Last Day

Helena AP reports Montana's highway fatality list updated as Vernon Olson of Glendive is removed after dying of a heart attack while injured in an Aug 30 crash two miles west of Glendive. The yearly toll stands at 260, ranking third worst all time. total since 1952 reaches 3,106 killed and 50,000 injured with a nearly $50 million annual economic loss.
