Montana marks centennial at Tournament of Roses parade
In Pasadena Montana kicked off a year of centennial events with the 100th anniversary of the Montana Territory. Gov. Tim Babcock fired the midnight shot to start the celebration and Sen. Mike Mansfield joined in sprinkling gold dust on a float themed The Last Frontier. The float featured an Indian headdress of flowers and pine-tree accents. Four girls represented the state, while Montana musicians performed in Los Angeles before a Kaiser event with Dwight D. Eisenhower as main speaker. Babcock and Mansfield attended, wearing 1860s top hats. The delegation also set up a Rose Bowl bet with Illinois and Washington governors over a box of apples.

Montana Power Plans 230 KV Line to Anaconda in 1964
The Montana Power Co. will begin preliminary work on a new 230000-volt, 149 mile transmission line from Hot Springs to Anaconda to link with regional utilities. Clearing is expected when weather allows and service is planned for 1965 with later expansion toward the Idaho border. The project forms part of a Northwest high-capacity grid aimed at lower costs and greater reserves through larger plants and interconnections.

State Records 229th Fatality in Glasgow Crash
David Bruce Goff 16 died in Glasgow after his motor bike collided with a Mountain States Telephone Co truck in eastern Glasgow. The death raises the state traffic toll to 229 for the year from 256 last year. Goff was a Glasgow High School sophomore, son of John and Mrs. Goff. Police noted skid marks 56 feet long. The truck was driven by Sam Kinzele, a cable splicer for Mountain States.
