Paris reports Marshal Joffre, once near death, sat up and drank milk with a nurse feeding him. Dr Rene Fontaine said there is no danger of dying tonight, though the crisis remains far from over and doctors refuse to be optimistic about his condition.
The New York report notes 43 state legislatures will adjourn in the coming year with about 20,000 new measures. Four states Virginia Kentucky Louisiana and Mississippi will not meet. The dominant topics are Money and morals with major statutes on taxation appropriation debt retirement and public works. The program groups into Taxation Prohibition Penal reform and related areas.
Prof Albert Einstein spoke to about 8000 in San Diego praising education and mental progress while acknowledging the welcome he received. He described himself as simple and noted the world now honors thinkers and new ideas, whether proven or not. (Continued on Page 2, Col. 7.)
New Orleans police rushed a squad armed with riot gear to the first precinct police station and adjacent criminal courts building after rumors of a planned bomb attack during New Year fireworks. The force acted as a precautionary measure to deter any attack.

George A. MacDougal, notable court reporter and former head of the stenographic department at the Anaconda Company, died of heart failure in Spokane on Monday and was buried there yesterday. He is survived by his widow and a sister of the late F. D. Gregor.

Hours for masses at St. Patrick St Ann Sacred Heart St Lawrence St Marys St Joseph Immaculate Conception and St Johns were set for 6 15 7 8 9 10 and 11 o clock with variations. The last mass in most churches will be a high mass with special music.
Miss Mary O Brien deputy clerk of the court records that a 60 member Alimony Club in Butte has paid over $25 000 in 1930 dues with December payments totaling 2017 50. Wives collect alimony weekly and monthly with sums from 20 to 250 dollars while the payer sees little of the beneficiary. The club chairwoman notes men bear the payments and the wives receive the funds in person or by check.
Denver attorney John M. Keating said a motion for a new trial for Pearl O Loughlin, convicted of murdering her 10 year old stepdaughter Leona, will be presented January 7.
Veteran scout and former Butte resident Taylor, who served as Confederate and Union soldier and appeared in Western films, died in Los Angeles at 103. He left Butte years ago after a street food ban and later found work impersonating army types in motion pictures. He reportedly told locals he planned to ride branches for Montana youngsters before his death on December 26.
Chairman Legge foresees elimination of short selling as grain men and the farm board dispute winds down in 1930. He urges further federal regulation of exchanges and consolidation of laws and bureaus, insisting properly regulated grain markets serve a useful function even if the board of trade could close.
In Buckeye, Arizona, on December 31, five Hassayampa River homesteaders fought over land rights after unguarded horses strayed onto disputed ground. One man, Billeen, 26, was killed by a shotgun blast. William Mathewson was wounded in the shoulder and Blanche Griner was hit in the arm. Officers said Nelson Kilegrew and his son Lewis had long fought Dyer after a ranch house fire.
Poison listed as cause of death for Lieutenant Bruce Settle, naval aide at the White House, in a transportation certificate for removal to Tennessee. A naval hospital autopsy result was withheld and a coroner’s jury ordered. An inquest set for Saturday after Settle was found dead at his desk in the navy yard.

Adolphus Busch Orthwein aged 13, great grandson of Adolphus Busch, was reported kidnapped by a Black man in St Louis. Authorities in St Louis and surrounding county launched a wide search after being notified tonight.
Reina Andrade chosen as provisional president of El Salvador after Lasaro Chacon and General Manuel Orellana resigned following a December coup. The United States said it will not recognize Orellana's regime.
