Stolen Auto Replaced by Second Stolen Car Swap
Police searched for a blue two door Mercury reported stolen on Tuesday from the Car Market lot at 300 S. Main after a man in his 30s test drove a 1957 Chevrolet and disappeared. The returned Chevrolet was later found to be stolen in Helena. The Mercury fled with plates 30-7654.

Poor Fund Measure Faces Senate Study in Montana
The Montana Senate Finance and Claims Committee will study HB66 before deciding its path in the Senate. Chair Sen. Ed Carney says the bill may remain in House form or be amended. The measure would raise counties to a 20 mill poor fund levy to draw state welfare aid, up from 14 mills. The House passed it 65-25, with six basic mills plus a 14 mill permissive levy. Public hearing drew supporters and opponents as Silver Bow Cascade and Mineral counties have strained welfare funds. Representative William R. McNamer advocated the bill.

William Walters Dies After Long Illness in Butte
William H Walters died in a local hospital following an extended illness. A Butte resident for 85 years he was born July 4 1874 and lived at 531 Shields. A carpenter by trade he retired 15 years ago and enjoyed hunting fishing and baseball. He was a charter member of the Butte Carpenters Union and a Methodist. Surviving are a sister Mrs Roy Peaberthy of Denver and a nephew George Tippett of Butte. Funeral services are set for Saturday at White's Funeral Home.

Stolen Mail Found Near Berkeley Pit Garage
Sheriff deputies found mail stolen from the Bozeman area scattered over a large area near the Berkeley Pit garage. Postmaster Wilkinson said most mail from the Helena bound sack was recovered or returned, with checks ripped out and several bundles left untouched for IRS and other agencies. Postal workers washed mud from letters and prepared to return or forward the parcels to their destinations.
