At the five power conference in London Japan and France proposed dividing fleets into classes with capped tonnage for battleships aircraft carriers and cruisers while the Americans and British questioned details. Italy urged fixing total tonnage before class limits and the French outlined four ship categories including submarines.
In federal court Cheyenne Wyoming Judge T Blake Kennedy overruled motions for directed verdicts for five defendants including William C Irving as the government conspiracy case collapsed after 12 reached trial from 29 originally indicted. The jury then heard motions for directed verdicts for Irving and the other four defendants.

A man named Harry K. Bramhall of 489 East Park Street was ordered to appear in police court after his car crashed into railroad gates on Wyoming Street. Officers Hannigan and Mooney investigated. Bramhall was shaken but not treated.
The Silver Bow county commissioners ordered the sheriff and police chief to arrest auto owners still using 1929 plates. State law requires new licenses by January 1, 1930, with fines of 25 dollars for violations. The registrar reported most applicants have been processed and hundreds remain on the road.

Nine Butte residents were seriously injured when a sedan driven by George Keily smashed into a city truck at Broadway and another street this morning. The injured include James Boyle Ruth Wallace John Sullivan Effie Getenbert John Fox Helen Smith Bertha Buyck and George Keily. all received emergency treatment and were rushed to St James hospital.
Tommy Penaluna a 21 year old Butte skating star departs for Banff Alta to defend titles at the annual ice carnival running Feb 1 to Feb 8. Penaluna has won junior and senior championships at the Canadian carnival multiple times and will enter six events including 220 and 440 yard sprints and distance races. His first event is the two mile race on Wednesday night.
Two U S Navy aviators were seriously burned when their plane crashed into a hangar at Long Beach airport. A rudder failure sent the craft into the hangar, overturning and burning. Names given: Linets Joe Parant and A Hutchin con.
Mrs. Mary Fix died at her son M. F. Fix's home near Concord late yesterday. Reported age about 112, relatives say she was born September 1, 1817.
A radiogram from the Standard Oil tanker Liebre bound for Beaumont reports the tug Edgar F. Coney sank in the Gulf of Mexico with 14 missing crew members after aiding a barge en route to Mobile. Names include master William Brennan and chief engineer O. G. le among Port Arthur families.
Butter’s KGIR radio marks its first anniversary with a ten thousand dollar broadcast from 7 p m to 6 a m Sunday. The program features Butte entertainers including the Butte Male Chorus and the composition Rosalie by Frank Heff, sung by Melvin Dempsey with Heff at piano and Dr William Sullivan on violin. No studio access for visitors due to space limits.
Washington January 31 The agriculture department reports the livestock industry is entering a period of expansion due to favorable conditions over the past years. Cattle and sheep numbers rise while hogs and work stock fall. total value drops to 5.865 billion from 6.003 billion last January. Hog slaughter for the marketing year ending September 1930 is expected to be smaller than the prior year.
