Butte residents plan New Year's Eve celebrations at the Butte Country Club Meaderville and Finlen hotel with dinners dances and toasts. The annual events unfold as Roosevelt reveals a 1943 production push may absorb half the national income.
Soviet Red troops of the Caucasus and the Black Sea fleet stormed and recaptured Kerch and Feodosiya in Crimea after a two day battle. Stalin sent congratulations to General Kozlov and Rear Admiral Oktyabrsky as German forces face renewed pressure from Soviet offensives toward Rostov and the Caucasus.
Cairo reports the Axis forces in Libya suffered 42 tanks lost in a retreating bid against growing British pressure near Agedabia and along the Gulf of Sirte. A British communique says 22 enemy tanks were knocked out and 20 damaged, as a Hussars regiment captured five truckloads of German infantry.
Butte registrants over 28 years old in Class 1-H have been reassigned to other groups. Boards gain material for 1-A and 1-B. 2-A and 2-B remain tighter, allowing only workers essential to defense for up to six months. Prior to war, classifications were permanent. Some 28 year olds in 1-H have no dependents and are seen as good soldier prospects. others are fit for limited service in 1-B.
Butte predicts cloudy skies with snow and cooler temperatures on Wednesday. Tuesday highs reach 23 with 11 as the low. Montana forecasts more snow and colder conditions, heavy at times in the south with blizzard risk and winds of 20 to 30 mph.

Edward A. O Neal president of the American Farm Bureau Federation says he approved wartime curtailment of government expenditures for federal farm agencies created to handle depression relief.
Silver Bow county asks auto truck and trailer owners to bring old plates when applying for 1942 licenses. A box will be set in the county treasurer’s office for disposal of old plates to save metal for defense.
On Luzon Manila front the Japanese press forward with tanks and dive bombers as American lines retreat toward a new line 30 miles from Manila. U S Navy reports suspected Japanese subs near Kodiak Alaska and Midway Island remains under American control.
Singapore proclaims martial law after four heavy Japanese air assaults are repelled with 11 casualties and minimal damage to the British base. British communique notes no major changes on the Malayan peninsula while Japanese raids are hampered by searchlights and anti airfire.
Hiram W. Rodgers, a pioneer Montana attorney long associated with the Anaconda Copper Mining Co, died at 76 in his Montana hotel apartment. He practiced in Anaconda about 45 years, with notices of illness in recent days and the death discovered by hotel manager Wilbur Davis.
