Lumen W. Allen to celebrate 100th birthday Sunday

Lumen W. Christmas Flight Delays Send Helena Woman On Detour

Mrs Elva Newman of Elliston Mont searched for Christmas visit with son Robert in Missoula but weather forced a sequence of landings. The trip ended with Newman in Seattle and a bus ride to Spokane before a Greyhound to Helena. She plans to try again by bus this weekend.

Medical insurance premium to rise by $1 per month

The voluntary medical insurance program supplying Medicare extras will increase from $3 to $4 per month, effective April 1. Marines suffer heavy losses in village battle in Vietnam

North Vietnamese regulars killed 48 U.S. Marines and wounded 81 in a fortified village 410 miles north of Saigon. The battle at Thon Tham Khe involved close-range fighting, artillery and naval gunfire support, with Marine units eventually overrunning the village after dawn. Communist losses were about 27 dead. In Quang Nam, 19 Marines were killed and 25 wounded as helicopters supported another operation with Vietnamese forces. Communist losses there were 33 dead and two captured.

Explosion Lifts Roof as Eight Children Escape Injury

LEADVILLE Colo AP eight children escaped without a scratch and Mr and Mrs E G Potter suffered minor injuries when a gas hot water heater thermostat failed causing an explosion that lifted the roof off their home and shattered nearby windows. The blast sent debris over three feet deep as the Potter children aged 4 to 13 awoke amid wreckage. Potter received cuts and bruises while his wife was hospitalized with chest injuries and possible broken toes.

Jazz King Pat Whiteman Dies in Ipstown Incident

Nine Girouard children perish in Lac des Isles fire

AP reports Queen Anne Marie of Greece, 21, and King Constantine faced exile and political turmoil after a failed counter coup. The Danish-born queen miscarried the anticipated June child Thursday night in Rome, following their Dec 13-14 flight from Greece.

Billings License Law Blocked by Judge’s Injunction

Yellow stone County District Judge Charles Sandee issued an injunction against the city of Billings and its treasurer Thursday to halt selling business licenses. The suit, filed by two Billings attorneys, contends the ordinance requiring licenses conflicts with Montana law prohibiting municipalities from imposing taxes on attorneys. By Thursday 483 licenses had been issued under the ordinance, with fees ranging from 6 to 600 dollars.

Snow delays area travel in Montana mountains

Snow stymies area traffic with 13 inches on Boulder Hill and ongoing snowfall at 5 p.m. Chains are required on all vehicles and on towing units. Roads out of Butte vary from snowpacked to wet but fair while routes to Bozeman and Missoula show mixed conditions. MacDonald Pass remains snow covered and icy.
