Marines suffer heavy losses in village battle in Vietnam
North Vietnamese regulars killed 48 U.S. Marines and wounded 81 in a fortified village 410 miles north of Saigon. The battle at Thon Tham Khe involved close-range fighting, artillery and naval gunfire support, with Marine units eventually overrunning the village after dawn. Communist losses were about 27 dead.
