Helsinki dispatch reports fierce hand to hand fighting on Lake Suvanto as Finnish forces annihilate two additional Russian companies. The battle follows renewed attempts to breach the Mannerheim line with 700 Russian casualties claimed on the ice.
Severe tremors, subzero weather, and blizzard winds aggravate destruction across Anatolia. Officials estimate 60,000 casualties with up to 20,000 dead in Erzinjan and widespread fires and frozen water lines hampering rescue efforts.
Dr. T. L. Hawkins of Helena was chosen director of services for crippled children in Montana’s Department of Public Welfare. He will assume Jan 1, 1940 on a part time basis succeeding Freda Miller, who remains as assistant director. The change follows the federal Children's Bureau demand for a medical head. John Coey was named director of child welfare services.
Babson Park Massachusetts special report foresees the first half of 1940 delivering the best six month period since 1929 with gains in jobs wages farm prices profits and dividends. He notes no sharp rises in taxes or living costs and warns of political and economic clouds over the horizon.

Miriam Solovieff an 18 year old concert violinist escaped injury when her father Aaron Solovieff shot and wounded her mother Elizabeth and sister then killed himself in their Riverside Drive apartment in New York. Elizabeth was wounded in the abdomen and expected to die. Aaron Solovieff died minutes after the shooting. The family was estranged for five years.
Mayo Clinic announced a new preventive for airplane bends affecting interceptor pilots. The method, developed in six weeks, is said to aid air combat on the European front and in North Sea bombing raids. Presenters include W Randolph Lovelace II Walter M Booth and Captain O Benson.
Three state WPA officials will attend a Montana water conservation board meeting in Helena to discuss a comprehensive water survey and the completion of water conservation dams. Joseph E. The meeting will cover a recently approved measure and the progress of ongoing works.
Former President Herbert Hoover, chair of the Finnish Relief Fund, sent $100,000 to Premier Ryti for civilian rehabilitation of 500,000 homeless women and children in eastern and central Finland. The appeal at Madison Square Garden featured Mayor La Guardia and senators Wagner and Wheeler.
Reports from the Salla front say a new Russian offensive against central Finland sought to punch through the waist line with hundreds of rapid fire guns. Finnish officers noted dis organized Russian units and self inflicting fire as terrain confusion spurred errors. To the north near Petsamo, Russians began trench diggings after a five day withdrawal toward the Arctic Ocean.
Attorney General Murphy announced a special grand jury would convene in Washington on January 2 to investigate espionage and sabotage. He also said the Justice Department has begun a broad inquiry into anti-Semitic activities.

Governor Roy Ayers refused Lee Simpson’s clemency petition for the Ryegate slaying of Deputy Sheriff Arthur Burford in 1938. Simpson, 51, faces execution by hanging in Ryegate between 2 and 8 a.m. Saturday. The governor cited sanity findings and said interference would exceed his authority.
The American Association of University Professors with 15,313 members placed five colleges on its censured list for alleged denials of academic freedom. Censured were West Chester State Teachers College, University of Tennessee at Knoxville, Montana State University at Missoula, St Louis University, and John B Stetson University Deland Florida.
A. B. Cohen, longtime Butte resident active in local politics, was appointed justice of peace for Silver Bow township to serve the unexpired term of the late Judge John Corbitt. He will begin January 2, 1940 after posting bond, filling the vacancy created by Corbitt’s death.
