Vietminh troops pressed from the Annam coast into Laos and captured Thakhek near the Mekong, splitting Indochina and threatening Thai frontier. French forces pulled back from Thakhek and rushed reinforcements as observers anticipate a swift counterattack.

In a dramatic North Atlantic event the Swedish freighter Oklahoma broke in two and all 43 aboard were rescued by the U S Military Sea Transportation Ship Bluejacket and the Finnish freighter Orion. President Eisenhower announced plans to withdraw two U S divisions from Korea prompting eager speculation among troops while South Korean officials voiced displeasure. Soldiers like Pfc Louis G Sheaps voiced hope of homeward orders though Gen Maxwell D Taylor cautioned withdrawals would not be immediate and would favor those with shorter remaining service. The 25th Division seen as long in Korea fueled questions about whether it would be affected.

Richard Bud Peterson of Butte is jailed in Deer Lodge County custody admitting the stabbing near Mitchell Park in Anaconda about 2 30 am Sunday. The weapon a broad bladed hunting knife is missing.

Questioned about must see attractions in southern California she unexpectedly said she most wants to see is smog. Local residents watched as the Michigan Apple Princess prepared for her first trip away from home and toured Hollywood sights with amusement.
