Senator Hart dies at 64 cancer claims liberal icon

Sen Philip A. Hart of Michigan, 64, died at his Washington home after a cancer battle. The longtime liberal voice helped push civil rights and consumer protection laws. He announced in 1975 he would not seek another term. Funeral plans include a memorial mass at St Matthews Cathedral and private burial on Mackinac Island. Donald W. Riegle will succeed him in the Senate.

Time names Carter Man of the Year for 1976

Time magazine selects Jimmy Carter as Man of the Year for 1976 citing his rise to the presidency and the dramatic shift in American life his designation marks. Carter becomes the third President-elect to receive the honor following FDR in 1932 and JFK in 1960.

Nursing home blaze kills 20 in Newfoundland village

A two story Chase's Rest Home in Goulds Newfoundland burned in the early hours killing at least 20 people including a 105 year old woman and a teen. Firefighters faced sub zero weather and ice covered water to combat the blaze as authorities search the ashes for more victims. The building housed up to 30 elderly residents and the cause was under investigation amid reports of a rear propane tank ignition.

Carter election tops AP list of 1976 news

The Associated Press poll names Jimmy Carter's victory over Gerald Ford as 1976's top story with 402 votes. Mao Zedong and Zhou Enlai deaths rank second, the Bicentennial third, while the rest include the U.S. economy, Legionnaires' disease in Pennsylvania, Viking Mars landing, Washington sex scandals, Patty Hearst trial, Israeli raid on Entebbe, and California school bus kidnapping.

Passengers Injured In Amtrak Derailment Near Downingtown

An Amtrak Broadway Limited train derailed in Downingtown Pennsylvania injuring at least 28 passengers. Most treated for cuts and bruises with one admitted. About 200 passengers from a five car holiday train were housed in Coatesville High School gym. Four of five cars overturned and overhead wires fell, cutting service Philadelphia to Harrisburg. Police reported power outages in the west end of Downingtown.

Woman to become Ohio's first female sheriff

Kathy Crumbley of Belmont County is elected Ohio’s first woman sheriff and likely the nation’s third. The 30 year old, 6 foot tall former deputy, trained at the Ohio Peace Officer’s Training Course, will take office January 2. She will oversee 13 deputies plus four federally funded workers and a 10 man mounted unit.
