FAA antihijacking system slows hijackers and gains use

FAA concedes it has not yet caught a hijacker but notes a slowdown in hijackings since mid-September as Eastern Airlines and TWA deploy the behavioral screening device. Fifty or so passengers have been screened with only about a dozen fitting the profile, and no arrests have been made.

Agnew to bolster Asian allies hopes

Vice President Spiro T. Agnew traveled to Asia and said President Nixon would seek a $54.8 million jet purchase for Formosa if Congress includes it in foreign aid. He told reporters that Senate rejection of unbudgeted planes does not weaken treaty commitments and noted White House support from Laird while Rogers remained cautious.

Nixon team probes funding ways for tax cuts

President Nixon said he will sign the tax reform bill but faces a budget problem from an estimated 2.5 billion revenue loss. He plans a California trip but remains in Washington to finalize the budget with Defense Secretary Melvin Laird noting defense outlays will shrink as a share of the federal budget. The State of the Union address is scheduled for January 22, with fiscal 1971 budget for Congress the following week.

Burglars Hit Buttrey’s Store Complex Again

Sheriff’s office investigates the second burglary in 11 days at Buttrey’s Suburban located at 3100 Harrison. Entry was through a skylight late Thursday or early Friday. Loss includes at least $1,000 in clothing mainly from the men’s department and a substantial amount of liquor from the Pub. Inventory will take two to three days.

Byron C Kerr 97 Dies After Long Montana Life

Byron C Kerr age 97 died Friday in a local hospital born March 7 1872 in Bonaparte Iowa moved to Walkerville then Butte where he worked as bookkeeper accountant and cashier for Montana Hardware Co starting 1902 retiring 1939 He married Ora Kellogg in 1903. He was active in Summit Valley Lodge 123 AF and AM Masonry church elder and treasurer. Funeral Monday 10 30 at Sayatovic Whites with burial Mount Moriah Cemetery.

North Viet Nam delays Perot gifts for American prisoners

North Vietnam refused permission for H Ross Perot to deliver two plane loads of gifts to U S prisoners of war. Perot met Vu Tien and said Hanoi advised mailing parcels via Moscow. He warned that alternative plans would be found if food for orphans is blocked.

Area ranch hand knifed in throat and abdomen

Lloyd Rogers a 41 year old ranch hand from west of Butte was found with severe knife wounds to the throat and abdomen at the James Dick Ranch near German Gulch. He was in critical to fair condition at St James Community Hospital and police pursued an ongoing investigation with no suspect identified.

Suspect Pulls Gun On Butte Sheriff In Uptown Encounter

An all points search and roadblocks on major highways were set Friday evening after Silver Bow County Sheriff Ken Cunningham was pistol‑pointed at in uptown Butte. The armed suspect, about 40 with Alaska plated pickup, fled after being confronted. Roadblocks targeted routes to Anaconda Dillon Whitehall Boulder and Helena as authorities coordinated between the sheriff s office deputies and city police.
