Two Die In Wolf Creek Plane Crash Near Helena

A single engine plane crashed near Wolf Creek Monday night killing two men. A Malmstrom AFB ground crew confirmed the deaths of the pilot and passenger. The Mooney aircraft, rented from Northwest Mooney Aircraft in Great Falls, was flying from Renton, Washington to Great Falls. Boeing employees connected to the rental were said to be in the group. The Lewis and Clark County sheriff's office investigated the crash.

Army captain Charlie Banks of Holland Michigan protected five airmen in the Mekong Delta by diving on a Viet Cong grenade and throwing it away. He then fired on advancing soldiers and inspired his crew chief Robert Grace with calm bravery under fire. Banks awaits Congressional Medal of Honor consideration.

Communist force attacks Cavalrymen near Bong Son

A strong Communist force attacked troops of the U S 1st Cavalry Airmobile Division about 300 miles north of Saigon, marking the first major ground action after the Christmas truce ended. Man killed near Gardiner in logging accident

Snow and Cold Persist Across Montana Towns

Cold spell continues with more snow and very low highs expected. Monday highs ranged from 12 at Broadus and 14 at Miles City to 30 in Helena and Kalispell and 35 in Missoula, while Broadus and Helena saw snow. Overnight lows dipped to -13 in Broadus and -4 in Butte, with others around 18 at Glasgow and 21 in Missoula and Helena.

Holiday road toll may not be record this year

The Associated Press reports that the Christmas weekend traffic death toll reached 468 as the 78-hour period ended, about 20 percent below last year’s pace. The National Safety Council cites snow as a factor lowering travel, with 391 deaths in a comparable nonholiday weekend. The council projects New Year and next weekend tolls between 460 and 540.
