A last Panmunjom meeting before the provisional ceasefire line ends at midnight. Negotiators reported no progress in the morning session while a possible extension or continued limited activity loomed. Communists accused of prisoner list disputes and claimed 1,058 Americans were captured, with 571 dead.
President Truman selected George F. Kennan to be ambassador to Moscow. Kennan, originator of the containment policy, accepted after Ambassador Kirk requested retirement. The Kremlin reportedly agreed to his head of the U S mission despite Pravda’s earlier attack.
Coal miners walked off the job at scattered points in a memorial to 119 dead in West Frankfort Illinois. Union officials denied calling the walkout while five day memorial periods are allowed under the UMW contract. Investigators continued the probe into the disaster as mourners attended 47 funerals.
Senator Knowland reports Red China detains 363 Americans during Korea ceasefire talks. He says 33 jailed, 30 plus under house arrest, and about 300 denied exit visas seeking to leave China.
Sidney County authorities hold 35 year old man for investigation in the fatal beating of 26 year old white woman Mrs Jean Count. He will be questioned again Thursday as part of a preliminary inquiry.
Travel and production slowed in snow covered regions of the nation. Hudson Motor Car in Detroit laid off 6,000 workers amid shortages of car parts. Fisher body and Chevrolet plants in Janesville, Wisconsin closed, 2,500 sent home. Chicago and Detroit staggered under record snow. temperatures plunged across the Midwest. Hel ena hit -25, lowest Dec 26 reading in 73 years. An icy rain affected western Oregon, and fog hampered Tampa operations.
Demonstrations erupt against King Farouk amid government wrangles with Britain. In Alexandria a 5,000 strong student mob clashed with police injuring seven officers and two students. Cairo crowds at Fuad university protested adviser Afifi Pasha, closures of three universities followed, and emergency police patrolled the capital. The government and king dispute over Afifi Pasha and Amr Pasha amid foreign policy tensions.
In Lawrence Massachusetts on Christmas Eve Policewoman Clarke found four boys aged 1 to 8 in unheated rooms with no food or fuel. Mother Florence House 28 pleaded guilty to drunkenness and was held on $300 bail as police prepare additional charges. The children were sent to Burke Memorial Hospital where staff reported no frostbite and they were recovering.
Tehran reports a high authority warned that the U S program to bolster Iran against communism could collapse. The cause is Premier Mohammed Mossadegh's insistence that Iran remain neutral in the Cold War between Russia and the United States.
Secretary Tobin reported 1951 set records as Americans produced more goods and services, saved more, and spent more, with output up nearly 10 percent from 1950 and unemployment at 1.6 million. He noted gains in 1951 despite regional hard-hit areas including Beaumont Port Arthur and Laredo and predicted 1952 could surpass the 1951 peak.
The four day Christmas holiday death toll rose to 789 from 761 last year, with 535 traffic deaths below predictions. Fires caused 111 deaths and miscellaneous mishaps 143, while 119 miners died in a West Frankfort gas explosion not included in the accidental total. Texas logged 105 deaths and California 64.
Sofia radio reports a Bulgarian court convicted four men as spies and saboteurs in the pay of British American and Turkish intelligence services. An unspecified number of other accused were jailed from six to twenty years after a trial held Tuesday in Sofia.
In St Louis on Wednesday 21 year old Mrs Chester Johnson welcomed triplet girls named Merry Carol and Noel the day after Christmas.
A two engine Air Force plane carrying eight people was four hours overdue on a flight from Spokane to Travis Air Force Base California. The C-47 last reported over Klamath Falls at 4 17 p m. Flares were seen near Willows 120 miles north in the Sacramento valley.
American F86 Sabre jets traded passes with about 100 MIG15s over northwest Korea in a renewed air fight. The Fifth Air Force reported 237 bomb sorties by noon and no damage on either side. Ground skirmishes continued with infantry actions along the snow front and no American deaths in the 24 hours to 6 p.m. Wednesday.

The United States agreed to pay $120,000 in court fines to secure freedom for four American airmen imprisoned in Hungary. Congress debated the move with protests of blackmail while officials noted release cannot occur before Thursday due to Christmas holidays in Hungary.
In Greenfield Massachusetts on December 26 the draft board was surprised by a card from five men drafted here last March and now in Germany. The message pledges memories of the board and themes of roses and violets.
Twenty five warships of the U S Sixth fleet will make a courtesy visit to Spain January 9 to 15. The vessels will be divided among seven ports as the fleet represents the main body of NATO naval forces in the Mediterranean. The NATO council meets February 2 in Lisbon.
Butte townspeople noted a rebound from three days of subzero weather with temperatures rising from -22 Monday to -21 Tuesday and around 10 above Wednesday. Forecast calls for a high near 28 on Thursday and a return toward normal warmth for Mining City as residents adjust to the thaw.
ALHAMBRA Calif Dec 26 Ralph Kinney charged $90 for a physical examination that left him feeling terrible after two men inquired about an ailing oldster. One man posing as a chiropractor pressed Kinney's leg chest and spine and declared him fit before stealing his wallet.
