Saipan based American Superfortresses attacked industrial targets in the Tokyo area by daylight, with official word from Gen. H. H. Arnold. Further details would follow from Brig. Gen. H. S. Hansell as operational results were received.
General MacArthur reports heavy air strikes over the Philippines as 44 tons of bombs hit Clarkfield and Mindoro, while Japanese interceptors engage in stiff defense. Liberators target Mindanao and Borneo as Palompon capture blocks Leyte escape, with Japanese casualties rising to 114 120.
Prime Minister Churchill told Greek leaders and Allied officials that Britain aims to back a suitable Greek government chosen by secret ballot. Earlier a dynamite cache under the Great Britain hotel in Athens, possibly targeting Churchill and Eden, was found and neutralized by a British patrol. About 1680 pounds of German dynamite were discovered in a sewer near the hotel.
Soviet forces closed the circle on Budapest driving into the city from the west and seizing suburbs. Tolbukhin’s Third Ukraine army smashed into the Danube region while Malinovsky’s units pushed into southern Czechoslovakia nearing Bratislava and Vienna. The day’s fighting left more than 2,300 Germans and Hungarians captured west of Budapest, widening the toll of 7,800 prisoners and 14,000 enemy killed since December 21.
