Kennecott Copper Corp. announced on Christmas Day that 1,200 smelter workers are to report for regular shifts at the Salt Lake City plant. About 800 Garfield refinery workers are not to report until called. The move follows a settlement reached Thursday with two Utah railway locals ending a prior disruption. The United Steelworkers of America represents the smelter and refinery workers. Officials noted it will take time to accumulate enough smelted copper to restart the refinery.
The company reports negotiation progress with Mine-Mill an Smelter Workers as a wage deal nears 22.3 cents an hour plus fringe benefits. Hayden local has not ratified, citing tool specification disputes. Talks to resume Saturday or Monday with nine smaller unions still on strike. Represented groups include railroad units machinists craftsmen and clerks.

Six died in a two car crash near Tchula Mississippi. Five people died near De Quincy Louisiana. Three killed near Joliet Illinois when a stalled car was hit by a train. A car bus crash near Weslaco Texas killed three.
Montana’s November jobless total rose to a record 17,740 driven by a midmonth storm, metal mining disputes, and seasonal layoffs. Major losses came from mining and smelting with 3,700 and 2,500 respectively, while government and finance showed gains. Local offices in Butte, Great Falls, Billings, Kalispell and Anaconda accounted for most of the unemployment.

In Richmond Missouri AP: James Magill 26 shot and killed his ex wife Sherry Magill 22 and their 15 month old daughter Lee Ann then wounded himself in the chest. He was found in the kitchen while the two victims lay in the bathtub. He told officers to shoot him.
