Foreign orders keep New York analysts confident that heavy industries will maintain high employment into the new year. Aircraft and shipbuilding backlogs are estimated around 1.2 billion dollars, split roughly evenly, with payrolls rising as production speeds up. Additional orders since arms embargo lift have expanded backlogs.
The Associated Press reports 526 lives lost to Christmas violence over the holiday, with 353 traffic fatalities and 10 train deaths. Illinois led with 53 deaths, California 41, New York 39, and Michigan 32, while Delaware and North Dakota recorded no fatal violence.
Secretary Wallace says American farmland wears out faster than it is restored and outlines changes in Agriculture Department programs to boost soil and forestry conservation. Units affected include A A A, Farm Security Administration, Soil Conservation Service, Forest Service, Bureau of Agricultural Economics and Extension Service. Farmers will be asked or required to place greater emphasis on conservation.
Butte enjoyed a bountiful Christmas with open houses in many homes and joyous services. The Christmas communique says Finnish white troops fought on Russian soil and neared the Murmansk railway after crossing east of Lieksa. Finnish coastal batteries fired on the Marat while Russian raids hit several Finnish cities. Viipuri and Tampere reports note six Russian planes shot down.
Paris dispatch reports minimal fighting on Christmas day with a single enemy patrol raid repulsed east of the Moselle. The French night communique noted quiet fronts and the morning report said nothing to report. Berlin confirms continued low activity.
King George VI declared the empire ready to sacrifice to save freedom and spoke to 500 million people and Britain’s forces. A Royal Air Force pilot and a destroyer also contributed messages as the king urged steadfast resolve whether peace comes or renewed struggle awaits.
