In a war weary world the Yuletide message rings through as families reunite and soldiers return home. President Roosevelt speaks at Washington and to the armed forces warning against lingering darkness while urging faith and obedience to God.
Moscow reports a fourth major winter offensive driving German forces back in the central Caucasus and advancing 12 to 15 miles on the Don front. The operation killed or captured about 16,000 Nazi troops as Russian units seized several dozen localities and key railway hubs.
