State universities show rise of 668 students in Montana

Helena AP reports the Montana University System added 668 students this fall, a 2.8 percent rise to 24,863. Only the University of Montana declined by 169. MSU gained 462, UM freshman numbers fell, and Montana Tech saw the largest gain at 9.4 percent.

Storm brings heavy snow and white Christmas across Montana

A Montana storm dumped heavy snow and arctic air, inching into Helena and sweeping wide areas. Snow totals reached 20 inches at a Great Falls ski area, nine inches in Kalispell, and 10 inches around Lewistown as temperatures lingered in the 20s and 30s. Travel advisories warned of icing and poor driving conditions with improving weather expected Saturday and a cold Christmas forecast.

AWOL stowaways survive two weeks in airtight carton

Two AWOL soldiers from Crailsheim Germany survive two weeks trapped in an eight foot high airtight carton aboard a cargo ship. Randy Boutain age 19 and Dennis Feather age 25 from Fort Sam Houston await further action as they recover in Houston hospital in fair condition, dehydration noted. Helena man faces $1322 utility bill glitch

Harold Fryslie, director of Montana Department of Community Affairs, received a $1,322.02 electric bill for 69,895 kilowatt hours. Montana Power Co. blamed a billing computer error and noted seasonal weather and rate increases may inflate bills. Fryslie suspects a computer glitch or overcounting due to holiday usage. A spokesman said it would take time to correct the mistake.
