Pope Pius XII declared that defensive war is morally lawful and endorsed a United Nations police force to protect peace. Manhunt ends as 6 jailbirds captured after trooper shot

Six Texas jailbreakers were caught in pairs near Dover Tennessee after a 10 hour manhunt triggered by wounding state Trooper J W Bilbrey and commandeering his cruiser. The fugitives robbed a motel and grill, hijacked a Texas car, and fired on the trooper before abandoning the cruiser and fleeing. Bilbrey was treated for a hand wound.

Montanan Among 4 Jail Escapees

Four prisoners escaped from Bernalillo County Jail in Albuquerque and held a reporter and his family hostage for two hours while fleeing in the reporter’s car after taking seven dollars. The escapees were Floyd L. Stokes Robert B. Kennedy Paul Reid and Howard Luke. Kennedy from Lewistown Montana. Stokes held on larceny B and E and bogus checks. Kennedy federal firearms violation. Reid burglary. Luke car theft.

State Historian Dr. Phillips Dies at 73 in Missoula

Dr. Paul C. Phillips of Montana State University longtime historian editor and professor emeritus died Sunday in a Missoula hospital at age 73. He served as executive vice president of the university 1936-37 and taught there 1911-1954. He led the Works Progress Administration historical records survey 1936-39 and held roles with the U S Employment Service War Department Transportation Corps and the Federal Power Commission. Survivors include his widow and sister Miss Mabel Phillips. Born November 15 1883 in Bloomfield Indiana he earned A B 1906 M A 1910 and the Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1911 from Indiana University.

Plane Crash Kills Four Coloradans Near Del Norte

Four men died when a twin engine civilian plane crashed near Del Norte Airport during an apparent landing attempt. Victims identified by Chief Barney Black include Charles A Fouquet, a state liquor inspector, his son Richard Fouquet, both of Del Norte, and George Gray and Gus Hoof of Alamosa.

A theft hit Mrs. Belva Miller at 608 Colorado Butte Sunday morning stealing her Christmas dinner including a turkey and trimmings. Police reported there was nothing left for toast as she and her four children, youngest 2, faced breakfast until officers rallied day shift to provide a meal. Entry was gained through an unlocked kitchen door while Mrs. Miller worked and the children slept nearby.

Six Die in Minneapolis Hospital Fire from Christmas Tree Lights

Six patients perished when short circuited Christmas tree lights in the Doctors Memorial Hospital lobby ignited a blaze. Firemen evacuated more than forty patients, including babies, as flames spread through the five story brick building. The dead included Ella Mullins, Mary Ballett, Lydia Becken, Sarah Stone, Caroline Vale, and Clarence Green, all from Minneapolis. Loss tallied around $100,000 with extensive equipment damage and 50 patients moved to another hospital. Miss Frances Menefee heard a popping sound from the lobby tree around 3 am, then watched the lobby become an inferno as alarms spread.

Connecticut Fire Claims Five Lives in Meriden Tenement

A ground floor fire in a four story Meriden tenement killed five people including a man two women and two children. About 10 others were injured and a theater next door evacuated. Fire started in the S and H Stamp Co Store and spread through walls. Capt T J Tighe said identifications were not available immediately and Meriden Hospital treated about 10 more.

Probable crash site spotted on Italian glacier

A black spot high on Mt Ginor in northern Italy was identified as the probable crash site of a DC3 airliner with 21 aboard. Alpine patrols faced 7500 feet climbs, searching amid snow and fog as rescuers hoped for survivors or word of the American couple aboard.

Two Wyant brothers killed in Three Forks car fire

Two brothers Marvin Wyant 27 and Gerald Wyant 24 were killed when their car burned after a crash near Three Forks Montana. Sheriff Roger L Foster identified them and noted the fire burned the tires from the wheels as the wreckage burned. The incident marked the holiday death toll rise in Montana with 261 fatalities for 1956 by year end.

Repeat Robbery Strikes Salt Lake Store

A suspect robbed an all night Salt Lake City grocery store for the second time in 10 days. He threatened night manager Fred Whittington with a large caliber pistol, ordered him to the floor, and took about $70 this time after netting $190 in the prior heist.
