Canadian Pacific Airways officials said 17 of 18 aboard a DC3 survived a crash on Mount Okanagan 20 miles north of Penticton. Captain Quinton Moore was killed. co-pilot Leo Doucette seriously injured and several passengers also hurt. Rescue teams faced fog and bad radio links as survivors huddled by triangle fires awaiting ground help.
Albert J. Grosso, 25, of 2527 Locust Butte, sustained a skull fracture and serious injuries when his 1936 Ford Tudor sedan rolled over several times on the Butte Deer Lodge highway about one mile north of the Butte Anaconda junction. He was taken to St Ann hospital in Anaconda in severe shock. Deputy Sheriff John Miller and Police Officer Thomas Connolly rushed him to help. cause of the crash was not determined.
The Associated Press reports a grim Christmas season start with 240 deaths by midnight Saturday including 197 traffic and 43 miscellaneous fatalities. The national safety council had forecast 440 traffic deaths over the 78 hour holiday window, an average near 135 per day.

U S Eighth Army in Tokyo paced for a large attack aimed at Seoul as Chinese and Korean Red forces pushed south of the 38th parallel. MacArthur said Reds massed for a Christmas onslaught while Hungnam shelling began and Lt Gen Walton Walker died in a jeep crash altering command.
Lt. Gen. Matthew B. Ridgway departed by air to assume command of the Eighth Army in Korea after the jeep accident that killed Lt. Gen. Walton H. Walker. The 55-year-old airborne expert left his post as Army deputy chief of staff for administration to answer Gen. Douglas MacArthur’s summons. At the airport officials including Secretary of the Army Pace and Assistant Secretary of State Dean saw him off.

Communist forces northeast of Seoul released 11 American and 25 South Korean prisoners of war. The freed men were said to be near the 38th parallel with no additional details available. This followed a prior prisoner release before last month’s all-out attack.
