The Associated Press reports a record holiday trade with the heaviest sales since 1929. A broad industrial upswing and higher payrolls boosted purchasing power for furniture and gifts as retailers posted strong results and late rushes. Weather and Thanksgiving timing influenced buying patterns.
President Franklin D Roosevelt names Myron C Taylor as his personal representative to the Vatican to seek peace and relief from the global crisis. The letter was delivered to Archbishop Amleto Cicognant by Archbishop Francis Spellman and A A Berle, with notices to Dr George A Buttrick and Rabbi Cyrus Adler.

Finnish high command says a surrounded Russian force at Aglajarvi near the southeastern front was nearly destroyed before surrender. While Finnish troops report successes on the eastern fronts, Russian air raids hit strategic Finnish cities for the fifth straight day.
The United States and 20 American republics protest to France Great Britain and Germany over warcraft activity in U S waters including the Graf Spee clash with British ships off Uruguay. They announce consultations to strengthen continental neutrality rules to prevent refueling and repairs by belligerent vessels.
Two injured pedestrians were listed in local hospitals last night. A third man faced drunken driving charges after backing a car into a Christmas tree at the Galena Main intersection. Seven year old Lawrence Kalafatich suffered head injuries after being struck by a car driven by Tom Quinlan. Kalafatich was taken to St James hospital for treatment. Aranda Calion was treated for severe bruises after a fall from the courthouse rotunda railing and admitted to Murray hospital. A man identified only as Dave was also reported in custody.
Secretary Hopkins projects national income this year at 63.5 billion dollars, up 34.5 billion from 1928. November income payments to individuals reach 5.4 billion, the highest for November since 1929, signaling a current income flow over 72 billion per year. He forecasts 1939 income payments at 70.0 billion, up 3.7 billion, noting differences reflect direct relief disbursements.
A star of Bethlehem appeared last night atop St John the Evangelist church on Cobban avenue, sending a Christmas message to all. The beacon was built by a parish friend and lit up the sky as residents viewed the illumination.

The Roosevelt White House hosted an East Room Christmas party for household staff and about 200 children. The President and Mrs Roosevelt greeted guests, distributed gifts, and four generations of Roosevelts attended except Franklin D. Roosevelt Jr. and his wife. Frankie the 17 month old boy did appear as a family member. Continued on Page 22.
United States and other American governments plan sanctions to enforce the Pan American safety zone amid world war tensions. Protests were sent over naval actions in American waters such as the Graf Spee battle off Uruguay. Helsinki reports Finland’s government announcements as war continues.
A blaze swept the Anaconda mine machine shop injuring two men. Fireman treated for smoke exposure at Murray hospital, while Michael Sheehan received a head cut after slipping on a ladder. Harold Fleming treated for smoke and later released. Police kept onlookers back as investigators determine the cause.
The Butte Kiwanis club acted as the good angel delivering 200 Christmas dinner baskets to needy families, each with a full holiday meal. Salvation Army aided distribution, with Rotary, Ex change, Elks, and women’s groups also contributing to the season’s charity efforts.
