Montana house approves amended gambling bill on third reading after a late night clash over a cigaret tax and a narrow quorum dispute. The measure targets slot machines and punch boards with a 35 to 15 vote as lawmakers wrestle over 8 hour day plans and remaining bills at the end of the session.

A new treatment for the head cold, reported by the Journal of the American Medical Association and Dr. Harold S. Diehl of the University of Minnesota, shows 74 to 78 percent success. The drug combines codeine and papaverine, two opium derivatives considered practically harmless.

Four people, two from Butte and two from Anaconda, were injured in a collision at the Butte Anaconda and Deer Lodge highways near Crackerville. Jack Schaefer, 10, suffered three broken ribs and a facial cut. George Schaefer, 6, lost several front teeth. Miss Ann Stokan and Mrs. Fred Mesenko, sisters, were treated for cuts from flying glass at St. James hospital. Dewey Schaefer, driver of a Owl (?) Furni ture truck, was unhurt. George Stokan, driver of the other car, escaped injury. Miss Stokan, a Montana State College student, was en route to Anaconda for the holidays. Treatments rendered by Dr. E. Shields.
Western Montana towns faced flooding as swollen streams cut roads and forced residents from homes. St. Regis and Saltese areas saw water over roads and train lines blocked, with Trout Creek washout closing the Northern Pacific high line. In Washington the deluge triggered dikes breaks and 65,000 displaced residents, nine deaths, and widespread disruption across states and provinces.
Governor Cooney signed five acts including H B 9 to fund a 300000 student union at the University of Montana Missoula with a federal loan and earnings payment. Other approvals cover county fairground leases, city street recovery funds, legislative assembly appropriation, and a congressional push for an agricultural code to lift farm prices.
