Lance Leone Armstrong, 21, of Laurel died after his car crossed I 90, struck a bridge end, and plunged into a dry irrigation ditch. The Montana traffic toll for 1965 reached a record 276, surpassing the 1961 peak of 275.
Defense Secretary McNamara ordered a $620 million belt tightening that defers 500 military construction projects across 42 states and DC, including living quarters and chapels. Essential combat support and safety facilities proceed. $686 million of high priority work continues overseas and in 16 locations.
U S war planes dodged missiles and faced down MIG jets at the Uong Bi power plant in North Viet Nam, with the Communist fighters fleeing toward China after interception. In the past two days seven American planes were downed and seven pilots reported missing, marking the worst losses since April.
Vice President Hubert H. Humphrey will extend a year end trip to include Formosa Korea and Japan at President Johnson's request to visit chiefs of state in each capital. The Johnson administration considers accepting a 12 hour Christmas Eve cease fire proposal from the Communists. Officials say a formal acceptance is unlikely since the offer came via radio rather than diplomatic channels. Secretary Rusk noted decisions rest with U.S. and Saigon authorities as Lodge and Westmoreland receive guidance.
The Titan 3 transtage failed to start engines as planned near 21 000 miles above the Galapagos. Three satellites released into odd orbits were usable only partly. a fourth satellite remains unlocated. The mission aimed to circle four payloads including a solar radiation instrument and a Hi beacon for amateur radio.

A Fargo area transient named Steve A Keoke was killed when he tripped on a loading block and was struck by a westbound Northern Pacific freight in Helena. The decedent was decapitated and identified from wallet papers. no witnesses and the train crew did not see the incident until after it occurred.

Zumwalt Zumwalt 48 of St. Ignatius was killed instantly when a lodgepole pine fell on him while sawing timber near Willow Creek 17 miles west of Philipsburg. He was found by co workers from E and L Logging Co of Missoula. Coroner Woodrow Wilson and Sheriff Nick Munis investigated and ruled no inquest. Survivors include his widow at St. Ignatius.
