Public attention in three Montana communities shifts Tuesday toward Anaconda where nearly 2 000 mill and smeltermen are eligible to vote on a contract offer. County welfare funds provide limited relief of forty thousand dollars, with relief details highlighted in the report.
Two young Montanans, Claude Vail and Clayton Marquardt, fled Stanley North Dakota jail after overpowering the sheriff Monday night. Minot police trapped the car, fired a shot, and the pair surrendered with hands up. Vail and Marquardt were serving sentences for aggravated assault and battery related to an attack on Stanley Police Chief John Tenborg. The escape led to a rapid pursuit and return to Stanley planned by Sheriff Hamre.
Welfare supervisor Josephine McArthur says food orders will last about a week for those who already received no aid since the Dec. 9 halt. County officials approve about $40,000 in relief until state grants arrive next week, with no immediate funds expected before July 1. In Chinook Montana 16 year old Walter Doney of Cleveland takes Miss Carol Wigger on a seven hour terror as he wields a .32 caliber pistol. He forces her to drive through backcountry roads before fleeing and surrendering as dawn breaks. He admits the thrill motive and is held on an open charge pending further legal action.
A four ton tank fell on 53 year old George Liknes at Great Falls Iron Works and crushed him to death. He was pronounced dead on arrival at a local hospital. Coroner Dr. C E Magner said inquest plans are uncertain pending examination. Liknes is survived by his widow and three children.
New York police report a woman cashier loses 5600 dollars to an 8 year old thief en route to a bank. The girl grabs a paper bag of cash at 85th Street, a passerby grapples the child, but a man arrives to recover the bag and both vanish.
Washington AP reports industry reps agreed to company-by-company talks in the steel dispute. Union President David J. McDonald hailed the move as a victory, while R. Conrad Cooper questioned the prospects for early settlement. Mediation continues daily as talks split across 11 large firms and 82 smaller firms. President Eisenhower’s hopes for a pre-trip deal fade as Sunday sessions complicate negotiations.
In Spartanburg South Carolina Lillie Beil 74 of Roebuck died after setting herself on fire to avoid being a burden to her family. Her daughter Lois Bruton heard the screams as Beil’s clothing aflame and stuffed with newspapers ignited. She suffered third degree burns over most of her body and had been treated for high blood pressure and age related infirmities.
The School District No. 1 board opened bidding for Roosevelt Nine Mile and Basin Creek bus routes. Ralph Olsen submitted a daily rate of 83.95 dollars, 16.50 higher than the prior price, prompting referral to the auditing and finance committee. Superintendent Haney noted higher operating costs drove the increase. A Kalispell public schools letter opposed playoff for AA football, calling for playoffs only on ties due to cost, lost time, and winter weather. the Butte board did not act.
A Navy supersonic jet fighter exploded in flight over Los Gatos and crashed near Route 17. Lt. Charles E. Southwick, 28, of San Jose, parachuted to safety and was uninjured, with the craft narrowly avoiding nearby homes and vehicles.
In Greybull Wyoming an evergreen sapling planted 23 years ago in John Holland’s front yard was cut down and removed by an unknown thief on Saturday night. Holland traced the tree from the Big Horn mountains to his yard and is puzzled by the loss.
President Eisenhower rode through Madrid in cold rain as about one million Spaniards cheered his visit. He rode with Franco along a 19 mile route decorated with flags and portraits, while Franco framed the visit as a stand against communism and American support. The crowd size was estimated by the Foreign Ministry at about a million. The President planned to depart for Morocco the next day and return to Washington Tuesday night.
The Farmers Insurance Group secured the city motor vehicles coverage for 3500 dollars the bid approved by all 12 aldermen at a closed session. City officials discussed the Municipal Code recodification and payroll concerns for a tax consultant with several aldermen opposing the salary item.
Stanley William Hansen 32 of Anaconda was found dead in his Beau dry Hotel room. An autopsy cited a fractured skull from a backward fall onto a radiator. He came to Anaconda in 1927 worked at Anaconda Reduction Dept boiler shop and was a Boilermakers Union member. Survived by wife Helen, a son and daughter in law Ronald Hansen, two sisters in Seattle and Anaconda, a brother, three nephews and a niece. Services Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Christian Church with burial Mount Olivet.
Daryl Chessman, 112 years on California death row, was condemned to die again with a February 19 gas chamber date set by Superior Court Judge Sherbert V. Walker. Attorneys A. L. Wirin and others vow further legal challenges, citing inadequacies in the trial record. He remains at San Quentin awaiting execution.
