President Dwight Eisenhower and Barbara welcomed a daughter named Mary Jean Eisenhower at Walter Reed Army Hospital at 4 58 p.m. The baby weighs seven pounds two ounces and joins three sisters and one brother in the family. Maj. Eisenhower spoke to his father to share the news and the grandparents visited the new arrival for 55 minutes.

Jacksonville reports that a Boston bound Eastern Constellation crashed in early morning darkness near the airport, killing all 17 aboard and a Miami man, C. B. Thrift. The disaster follows two Florida crashes in three days, raising fatalities and missing persons to 31. Captain Tom McBrien piloted the plane on approach. Eastern Air Lines notes no prior trouble and a long fatality free record.
Denver union official Maurice E. Travis, 45, was convicted on all four counts of falsely swearing he was not a Communist in affidavits filed with the NLRB. A six man six woman jury deliberated about four hours before the verdict before Federal District Judge Jean S. Breitenstein.
Leo F. Scalise, former Deer Lodge County official, was released from the state prison under an order of the Montana Supreme Court filed in the local district court. The court stayed execution of the sentence until January 24, 1956, and he may appeal. Scalise was sentenced December 10 for obtaining funds under false pretenses and released on bond of $1,000 to sheriff custody.
All mines and plants of The Anaconda Company in Butte will shut down on Christmas Day December 25 and Monday December 26. The company also will suspend operations on New Year’s Day January 1 and Monday January 2.
Lt Col Paul V Liles was found guilty by a 10 man Army court of aiding the enemy through propaganda recordings while a Korean War POW. He received a 24 month suspension in rank, stripping command authority but not affecting future promotions. The West Point graduate from Birmingham, Ala faced other charges dismissed or acquitted.
An 11-year-old boy baby-sitting while parents shopped shot his 2-year-old sister Donna Marie Cook under the Christmas tree. The gun was high powered. police call it an unfortunate accident. Grover William Cook, in a Davy Crockett shirt and badge, rushed for medical aid.
United Nations Security Council postponed indefinitely a vote on Japan's membership after Soviet Deputy Sobolev refused to rule out a veto. Britain sought delay to pressure Moscow, while Sobolev proposed linking Japan with Outer Mongolia, a move vetoed by nine other delegates.
The National Safety Council projected 560 people will die on the nations roads over the four day Christmas holiday from Friday 6 p.m. to Monday midnight. They warned the day before Christmas Eve is often the year’s deadliest and cited drinking and speeding as key risks. The all time four day high was 588 in 1952.
Lincoln City Forester Darrel Parker has confessed to the strangulation death of his 22 year old wife Nancy. Deputy County Atty Dale Fahrnbruch announced the admission on Wednesday night. Parker said he killed her because she was cold to him. The body was found December 14 in the Parker home in Antelope Park Lincoln.
Hollywood reports actress Toni Carroll, 26, filed for divorce from film distributor David L. Wolper, 27, alleging that his insults caused her to lose confidence and begin stuttering, a new ground she cited on Tuesday.
