Montana Highway Commission closed its 1961 session by awarding 1,536,530 dollars in highway work, lifting the year total to a record 42,627,667 dollars. Eight projects were let including two inter state jobs and three primary segments with 14.8 miles of highway and 1,607 feet of bridges. One Lewis and Clark project hinged on one more landowner signing a right of way agreement after being asked out of state.

Frances Harrington Philipsburg Librarian Dies at 78
Mrs Frances Harrington long time Philipsburg librarian and community leader died after a lingering illness. Born February 14 1887 in Havana Illinois she moved to Philipsburg as an infant and lived there most of her life. She married Jesse Harrington in 1921. he died in 1927. She served as librarian for eight years and chaired TB seal sales for a decade. She wrote Now and Then for the Philipsburg Mail and received a 50 year pin from the Order of the War of 1812. Funeral arrangements are pending with Wilson Funeral Home and services set for Saturday at 2 PM in the Methodist Church.

Elk Harvest Ties Indians to Yellowstone Park
The article reports that elk meat from Yellowstone Park riots have been stocked for tribes on reservations in Montana Idaho and Wyoming with rangers acting as hunters amid extreme cold. Since November 20 a thousand elk have been killed to trim the northern herd from ten thousand to five thousand.

Butte Man Survives Knife Stab Wound by Narrow Margin
Elmer Lehti 49 of 420 E Broadway was stabbed at Alley Bar 470 E Broadway around 8 p.m. The knife missed his heart by less than a half inch, requiring five stitches. Lehti identified attacker Emil Autio 67, who surrendered with a pocket knife. Police and deputies investigated the disturbance and took both men to Deputy County Attorney John Prothero. Lehti considered the stabbing an accident and declined to sign a complaint.

Arthur Sylvain, Butte Businessman, Dies at 82
Arthur M. Sylvain 82, a longtime Butte dry cleaning and dyeing shop owner, died at his home 405 S. Montana. Born in St. Jerome Quebec, he moved to Butte 70 years ago and ran City Cleaning and Dyeing for over 50 years. Survived by widow Florida LePage, three children including Gerald and Roger Sylvain, a sister and several brothers and grandchildren. Funeral services set at St. Patrick Church with a Rosary at night and burial at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Life sentence for man found guilty of first degree murder
Paul D. Cor, 23, was found guilty of first degree murder by a district court jury and sentenced to life imprisonment. The six jurors deliberated 13 hours in Judge John B. McClernan’s court after the 1960 murder of Shari McEwen, 16, near Butte. Sentencing set for Monday at 10 a.m. with Cor held in the county jail without bond.
