Washington reports a 1935 winter wheat yield of 475.8 million bushels, 157.1 million below normal. Despite 44.3 million more acres planted, drought reduced conditions to 77.8 percent of normal as abandonment rises to about 18 percent, with spring wheat planting dampened.
American business leaders at White Sulphur Springs Va. proposed a recovery platform amid sharp critique from Washington and Congress. They planned a January meeting with farmers and a later labor conference without consulting the president. Hopkins defended work relief, while officials urged examining the plan on its merits.
Washington reports house leaders favor a quick vote on the bonus issue to avoid it becoming trouble. A bill to pay off soldiers adjusted compensation certificates is likely in two to three weeks after the new congress convenes January 3. Leaders expect passage with pledges seen in both houses despite a veto threat. The move aims for a smooth start with the new 322 to 102 majority.
Neil Proffer of Billings scored an elk opening day near the Yellowstone park boundary. The animal was tethered by rangers for seven winters as a decoy to lure park elk outside the boundary. A tag read the elk’s age as 40.
W R Sholes and R E Morgan met yesterday afternoon at the New Finlen with L H Douglas S H Knowles and Dr J A Donovan to discuss forming grazing districts in Montana under the Taylor law. Interior department and state stockmen representatives plan districts on request of grazing interests.
The Federation of British Industries proposes a new trade plan to link Britain with Japan and Manchukuo. The 12,000 word report urges closest economic collaboration to end the Anglo Japanese trade war and save the British textile industry. Lord Herbert Scott chaired the grand council meeting approving the recommendations.
The Japanese cabinet approved ending the Washington naval treaty and notified Ambassador Saito. In London the U S delegation led by Norman H. Davis and Rear Admiral Standley said farewell to King George V and discussed a possible world naval conference in 1935. They believe Japan may cooperate and that a meeting hinges on informal talks.
Montana outlook calls for partly cloudy conditions Friday and Saturday. Rain or snow possible in the western portion Friday or Friday night. Colder temperatures expected east of the divide Friday with warmer readings in the extreme east Saturday.
Craig Read Curran will be five months old today and fly 1500 miles with his mother Mrs. Phil Curran from West Woolman Street to San Francisco. Mr. Curran, a Butte United Press manager, notes this will be Craig's first plane trip. A four month old earlier traveled coast to coast, making Craig the second youngest air traveler in the nation.
Butte postal workers handled about 200000 pieces of mail yesterday mainly Christmas greetings and gifts. Over 90000 stamps were cancelled by machine and an estimated 15000 parcels were hand stamped. Officials expect today’s rush to surpass the figure while incoming mail is believed to match outgoing.
A four day old baby boy abducted by a young woman posing as a mother was found in a boarding house with the infant and returned to his family. The suspect Mrs Dorothy Marsh, 19, was taken to a city hospital for examination.
United States Consul-General W. R. Peck announced all Americans in southern Anhwei province were safely out and concentrated in Wuhu and Hankow. Evacuation followed bandit activity after John C. Stam and his wife were killed in the region.
Montana's largest musical event features 700 selected 6th to 8th grade students at Butte High School auditorium. They rehearse daily under local directors and will perform Yuletide carols Sunday and Monday at 2:30 PM for the public, filling half the auditorium with soft, melodious voices.
A major Atlantic gale battered the coast causing crippled shipping and wrecked vessels. The collier Severance lost steering and needed coast guard aid as Champlain rescued a line. small craft and the Semmes were driven ashore with windows shattered. Christmas mail sailings delayed.
Hazel Grant Bourquin, Gounty auditor, received a mysterious request from Bellingham Washington asking for a letter stating how the voter cast a July 1932 primary ballot. State election laws prevent sharing individual vote records, making the letter described as the most unusual ever filed with the office.
Harry F. Miller a well known automobile repairman collapsed in his shop at 50 East Galena street from a heart attack. He died at St. James hospital after an autopsy. His assistant Henry Cunningham reported the incident as police sped to hospital and were involved in a collision with a truck en route.
President Roosevelt ordered Treasury experts to work today on overlapping and double taxation. A House Ways and Means subcommittee said cooperative action among government levels is the practical way to end the tax tangle. Morgenthau previews a national conference next summer to decide on taxing methods, possible zones, and elimination of tax exempt securities. Mayors La Guardia and Walmsley pledged support to reduce local tax field burden.
London reports circulated that Gregory Zinoviev a leading former opposition figure in the communist party was seized in a crackdown on anti Bolshevists after the assassination of Sergei Korov at Leningrad The Evening Standard carried a Moscow dispatch noting the arrest as a major development in Bolshevik politics.
Food and textile shops will remain open tonight and tomorrow as three shopping days remain before Christmas. Stores close at 9 p m tomorrow and at 6 p m Monday, then reopen Wednesday morning. Merchants report the best holiday business since 1930 and a revived Christmas rush. Night shopping remains popular with more liberal buying this year.
