Washington reports that strike activity in the first ten months of 1948 closely mirrors 1947 in both number and lost man-days. The era’s pattern shifts from 1947’s lone large strike to 1948’s several dramatic actions, while debates over the Taft-Hartley Act persist.
In Chicago on December 12 authorities pursued harder clues in the rape and killing of Roberta Rinemsah, a Brookfield parochial school pupil. Her body was found near a country cemetery after she disappeared Friday evening. The coroner reports beating, gagging, rape, and throttling. Investigators including State’s Attorney Boyle, sheriffs office, coroner, state police, and Chicago crime lab joined the hunt.
Funeral services for Mrs. Mary McKelvie will be held Wednesday at 2 in the Kendrick funeral home chapel. The Rev. George L. Van Bockern of the First Presbyterian Church will officiate. Burial will be in the Will family cemetery.

Helena December 19 Governor elect John W Babiter will meet Monday with members of the United States Highway association He has been conferring with Montana highway groups since his election November 2 and now completes his series of principal road discussions with the highway leaders in Helena Bonner's schedule reflects his focus on road development and transportation policy before taking office.
In Bozeman on March 19 a Montana State College experiment seeded two thousand wheat varieties from 50 foreign countries in Tetoncotta to find strains resistant to wheat stem sawfly. Rescue wheat, from four years ago, remains a benchmark while scientists seek factors beyond stem solidity that deter sawfly feeding.
HELEVA December 18 two Montana naval officers graduated last week with the first class from the general main naval school at Monterey California. Cmdr Arthur B. Sichelson of Big Timber and Lt. Paul O Connor of Butte were formerly reserve officers. They transferred to the regular Navy for further training at the new general dine school. The one month course offered broad professional training comparable to Annapolis.
Navy reports Montanans from Great Falls Havre and Laurel serving aboard Task Force 38 units during an intensive training period in the western Pacific and China sea area. Named personnel include Jack Lins electronics technician third class James Reuben Brown machinist's mate William J LaSalle and Robert John Biden aboard USS Pasadena and USS Dennis J Buckley.
Postmaster Myarl Fagg and Railway Express Agent G D Willen said Sunday that Billings has become one of the largest mail and express terminal points in the Northwest. They reported this year’s mail and express business surpasses all records of the central distribution systems.

Sam William Koich a 57 year old former Butte Helena businessman died at his Drummond home after a Sunday incident while addressing Christmas cards. He came from Yugoslavia as a youth, worked near a smelter, then ran a business in Butte and Helena before retirement. Surviving wife two sons five grandchildren and a sister are named. body at Opp Canpad Retz funeral home.
Newton Massachusetts reports Dr. Warren head of the atomic energy commission medical department says U S scientists may be going blind from radiation exposure. He notes most work involves cyclotrons not closely tied to commission projects and stresses radiation eye damage is a known hazard.

The Deer Lodge Chapter of Future Farmers held a regular December meeting in the agriculture building. Eight freshmen were advanced to the green band degree and several seniors were noted. Attendees included Bud Grover Don Beck and Glenn Jones. Reports were given by members who attended the national convention. The meeting closed with a screening of the film The Land to Have and to Hold. The next meeting date not stated.
The Federated Women's club Music Department schedules a Christmas program for Monday evening December 20 in Deer Longe. Mrs Alle Denton will preside and Mrs Alfred Nelson heads the program. Hostesses include Mrs K W Havieland Mrs HC Helnseh Mrs Tom Newhant Mrs P B Milwark and Mrs Kyle Shrauger.
George V. Allen United States assistant secretary of state for international affairs was received in private audience by Pope Pius XI at the Vatican. Allen, who arrived from Beirut Lebanon, headed the American delegation to UNESCO.

Police pursued leads at two German homes linked to his alleged companions as authorities confirm his escape following a prior Soviet zone crossing.
Greek guerrillas abducted 800 people in Karditsa in a single raid, claiming the largest seizure yet. BONNEVILLE DAM Ore Dec 19 Three Union Pacific section men were killed and 14 injured in a head on collision of two motor powered work cars on a remote stretch of main line near here. Police and ambulance crews rushed to the scene where rescuers carried injured men 300 feet through brush to reach the wreck. Debris lay along the track as wrecked cars scattered the scene.
A major blaze at the Valcartier arsenal in Quebec damaged several wooden buildings including a rolling mill, a laundry, and a chemical laboratory. The fire, which began before midnight and continued into Sunday night, caused an estimated loss of over 1.3 million dollars. Brigadier A. Thecinnt, in charge, stated that all danger is passed as minor explosions were heard during the incident.

Harry J. Dewey 74 of 525 West Mercury died after several months of illness, with death sudden. Born in Chicago on April 4, 1878, he moved to Butte before the century and worked in mining with Marcus Daly interests. Survived by his wife Mace Burn Dewey, a son Franklin J. Dewey of Buffalo Minnesota, a daughter in law and son in law, three grandchildren, and several siblings and in laws. The baby is at White's chapel.
Friends attended the funeral for Mrs Helen Strain widow of Joseph H Strain at Kendrick funeral home at 2 pm Sunday. She died Thursday at St Ann hospital. Husband owned Strait's department store at 221 East Park and died February 1946. Requiem included songs by Br Barnell and J B Danielson. Rev Elmer L Robison led services. Body to be sent Monday to Great Falls for burial beside Mr Strain.
Washington December 19 An official report by the Senate Investigating Committee reveals rich profits from exports obtained through fraud forgery and other illicit devices. The lack of checks makes it impossible to quantify how many millions of dollars of US products were shipped under an export central license system overseen by the Commerce Department. Senator Ferguson urged tightening controls noting changes since hearings began.
Two Japanese inventors announced a device that tallies yen notes automatically. The machine stacks notes in a heap, a metal finger counts and records the total electrically. The 100 yen note is the highest in circulation, worth under 35 cents, and many people prefer quick visual estimates over counting large sums.
Fire swept a municipal airport hangar in Fort Morgan Colorado Saturday night destroying 18 planes and the hangar itself. Estimated damage about 75000 with the hangar valued at 23000 and the rest loss to the aircraft. Fire Chief Willard Pischel said the blaze began around 1030 and apparently damaged every plane inside the hangar. Cause under investigation late Sunday.
