Naval headlines mix bomb raids and sinkings during winter war

Russian bombers raided Helsinki for the first time in weeks while Finnish planes countered with offensives along the border. At least four Russian aircraft were shot down and thirty two bombs, some 600 pounds, fell on Helsinki suburbs with limited damage. London reports a German offensive using aerial torpedoes striking British shipping. Two fishing trawlers and four other vessels including three neutrals were sunk or damaged, with crews saved or missing. Ships named City of Kobe Jytte Glittefjell Bogo Zealous Active faced torpedoes or mines amid ongoing Nazi attacks.

Officers and Crew of Graf Spee Are Ordered Interned

A damaged line reports Graf Spee officers and crew to be interned after a collision incident. Clyde Ingram, 27, of 1339 Iowa, remained at St James hospital with a fractured jaw and head cuts from a runaway fruit truck carrying about 10 tons of oranges and grapefruit that smashed into a rock wall on U S highway No 10 east of Butte. Authorities said his condition was not serious and he was recovering from a terrifying one mile ride at the wheel as patrolmen worked from afternoon until midnight.

Captain and Aides to Live in Buenos Aires Under Internment Plan

President Robert M. Ortiz ordered the internment of 1,039 Nazi officers and men from the Graf Spee. Some will be housed in Buenos Aires while others are sent to Argentina's interior provinces for the war's duration, with Germany bearing the cost. Captain Hans Langsdorff and his crew arrived in Buenos Aires after the Graf Spee blew up near Montevideo following a battle with British ships.

A German freighter defied a warning shot from a British cruiser and fled toward Port Everglades Florida where it anchored outside the three mile limit. The Orion dropped anchor to shadow the ship believed named Arauca of about 5,000 tons from Tampico.

Christmas Party for Crippled Children Planned

The Butte Auxiliary for the Rehabilitation of Crippled Children will hold its annual Christmas party for crippled children on Friday December 22 from 4 to 6 pm. Miss Louise Schrupp muscle training nurse will organize a program and a Christmas tree. About a number of children are expected with parents welcome.
