Butte post office reports record Christmas mail volume as 1951 rush gains momentum. Long lines form at parcel post and stamp windows while staff operates at top speed to prevent congestion. Postmaster Parker cites 139,797 cancellations Monday versus 130,204 last Saturday.
Washington reports a mediation session called by the government to avert a steel industry strike due on New Year’s Day. Price Chief DiSalle warned there will be no unjustified price increase. CIO Steelworkers seek 15 cents an hour plus benefits.
Anaconda Copper Mining company will distribute retroactive back pay totaling over 1.435 million dollars to employes in Butte Anaconda and Great Falls. About 825000 goes to Butte workers 420000 to Anaconda and 200000 to Great Falls. Checks will be issued Thursday at regular pay offices.
A fund to support medical research at the new Butte Community Memorial hospital will bear the name Oscar A. Dingman Memorial Fund for medical research. The plan, named for Oscar A. Dingman a Montana School of Mines professor, was proposed after his death and the hospital dedication. A local committee and hospital administrators will oversee donations kept and used locally for supplies and special equipment.
Notices posted in Butte by the Anaconda Copper Mining Company state mines and plants will run both shifts on Sunday December 23 1951 in lieu of Christmas Day observed December 25 1951. A change day will be December 25 and shifts on Sunday December 30 1951 in lieu of New Year’s Day observed January 1 1952.
Miles City story reports two 16 year olds Tom La Fave and Mrs Evelyn Donges sentenced to life for the robbery beating death of John Hoffman in LeMars Iowa. Judge S D McKinnon noted unfair state juvenile law restricting pursuing a 15 year old parolee. Appeals planned.
In Crewe a Royal Scot express from Glasgow to London was stopped to add a substitute ticket collector after all passengers aboard had not paid. The incident occurred Tuesday as the train neared Crewe, delaying the journey for the Scots on board.
Washington reports the Army began releasing the names and serials of 3,198 Americans listed as prisoners of war in Korea. The list, supplied by enemy sources, was not guaranteed accurate. By 12:24 a.m. EST, 125 names were processed and families notified, including Maj. Gen. William R. Dean among the names.
Blizzard like conditions hit western Montana with four inches of new snow in two hours in Butte. Winds up to 70 mph closed the Deer Lodge Drummond highway and McDonald Pass. Stalled vehicles and warnings kept westbound traffic in Butte. Temperatures dropped sharply with forecasts of sub zero readings and more snow expected through Wednesday.
A Northwest Greyhound bus carrying 29 passengers hung eight feet over the St. Regis river bank after avoiding a head on collision with a car that slid out of control. Driver Joseph Montroy and passenger Earl Parsons were involved. Parsons sustained chest injuries and bruises, others unharmed. Montroy evacuated passengers through the rear exit and continued the journey on a following bus.
Corp. Lyle W. Jacobson, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Jacobson of 927 Chicago, reported unofficially as a prisoner of war in the Far East. Defense department says his name appeared on the Chinese Reds POW list as of early Wednesday. The family had learned he was missing in action since Nov 10, 1950, and had received a July 1951 letter confirming his captivity. Another Montanan, First Lt. William P. Keenan of Forsyth, also listed on the same POW roster.
Across the United States wives and relatives await word as a wartime exchange list delivered by Communists and a Pentagon tally show names ranks and serial numbers of prisoners. Early days were slow as officials reported the process momentum to families and media networks.
Fort Belknap officer delivered news to Mrs Ella Blackbird that her son, Joe Plumage, a Fort Belknap Assiniboine sergeant reported missing in Korean action, is a prisoner of war since December 2, 1950. The letter from Peiping China reached her via Red Cross and she plans a tribal feast in his honor.

Communist newsmen stated 3,198 United States soldiers held by the Reds would celebrate Christmas in four camps near the Yalu river, with meals prepared for all prisoners of war including non Americans, as truce talks released camp locations for the first time.
The Communists confine 11 559 Allied prisoners of war in 11 camps around North Korea near the Yalu river border with Manchuria. Of these, 3 198 Americans are spread across camps near Sinuiju and Changsong including Pyoktong, with most British and other Allied troops in the same camps. South Koreans are held in seven other camps.
