Death Toll Rises to 136 in New York Air Disaster

In New York the collision of a United Airlines jet and a Trans World Airlines Constellation over Brooklyn and Queens left 136 dead, with 128 aboard and eight on the ground. Investigators sought causes, noting one plane may have been off course while both were descending to land. A lone survivor child died after more than a day, and authorities continued a massive CAB probe through the wreckage and debris.

Highway Patrol Seeks Daytime Speed Limit Authority

Montana Highway Patrol requests legislative power to set daytime speed limits in harmony with road conditions. Patrol Supervisor Alex Stephenson also seeks an implied consent law for alcohol testing tied to driver license applications. The move would let the Patrol Board establish zones with daytime limits above 65 mph, reversing 1959 legislative stripping of such power.

Castro seeks 30 year terms for four Americans in Havana espionage case

A Cuban military court in Havana finished the espionage trial of four Americans accused of tapping the New China News Agency offices to learn about a trade treaty and Cuba China relations. The court will announce verdict Monday and prosecutors urged 30-year prison terms, claiming the defendants spied for the United States.

In London the AP reports tuners at a Chatham bar found items tucked inside a piano including three sailor hats a soldier belt four beer glasses ten pennies an old sandwich and eight bars of candy pointing to a past patrons or crew member hoard hidden in the instrument.

Munich air crash kills many including U S students

An American military air transport crashed into a Munich street, killing 50 to 60 people. Eleven University of Maryland students aboard perished along with seven crew, a civilian, and numerous bystanders as the plane hit a church steeple and streetcar. Police fear many more deaths as bodies burn in the wreckage.

One Hospital Expansion Planned in Butte

St. James Community Memorial Hospital will be enlarged adding 100 beds and other department expansions while St. James Hospital will eventually close as a hospital. Sisters Cornelia and Ann Dolores announced plans pending architectural consultation with a conference planned next week. Closing not until expansion completes.

Kennedy names Day postmaster general in youth centered cabinet

President elect John F Kennedy completed a youthful cabinet choosing J Edward Day of Los Angeles as Postmaster General. The 10 member group averages 47.3 years, the youngest in the century, with Kennedy at 43 and McNamara among the oldest at 44. Jetliner Slips Into Snowbank at Logan Airport

An American Airlines 707 arriving from Los Angeles swerved into a snowbank at Logan International Airport. None of the 103 onboard was injured. The jet traveled about 6000 feet on a 10000 foot runway before veering, and passengers were bused to the terminal while the plane was removed and the airport reopened.

Clyde Park Man Hurt as Train Hits Truck at Crossing

A Clyde Park man, Marvin Jones, was seriously injured when his one ton delivery truck was struck by the Mainstreeter passenger train at a crossing three miles east of Livingston. The collision wrecked the truck, scattering debris over about 50 yards, and he was hospitalized in Livingston in serious condition.

Emperor Haile Selassie flew into Addis Ababa aboard a special flight as reports swirled that a palace revolt had collapsed.
